There's a technique for growing herbs, melons, squashes and things where you hollow out a bit of a soaked strawbale and tuck in the plant. The straw rots down to make a mulch. Where can I buy bales to try this (cuboid ones not the huge round bales!) and how much should I expect to pay?

Try pet shops or look in the Yellow Pages for suppliers of horse bedding.

I would think pet shops would be very expensive. You could try asking a riding stables where they buy their straw. A farmer is a better bet than a pet shop.
