Through the eyes of a visitor, Oxford is a Narnia of quads and Cotswold stone - through the no-less-magical lens of a mathematical mind, its domes and spires are the results of precise calculations, conforming to beautiful geometric laws and housing technology dependent on numerical information. You and your child/parent are invited to join Maths in the City, an hour-long tour, suitable for age 8+, through city centre from Rewley House to the Sheldonian.
You'll see friezes and columns decorated not just for show, but according to various symmetries (for there are many types); some familiar principles illustrated through interactive games; maybe you'll start to see formulae superimposed over everything like Sherlock does. But you'll definitely see that maths can't be contained in a classroom, and is manifest in urban planning, more traditionally 'creative' fields and the latest tech. Walks are led by well informed volunteers, and are free to join - be sure to give them a generously calculated tip if what they say adds up.
