Magdalen College (pronounced 'Maudlin') was founded in 1458. The college buildings are arranged in four quadrangles covering twelve acres and the grounds, covering almost 100 acres, include a deer park (the deer are friendly and will eat bits of apple) and some very attractive riverside walks. The college's founder made special provision that the staff of chaplains and choristers should always be maintained, and as a result, the college has its own choir school. Apart from providing the music at chapel services, the choir is also required to sing from the top of the 144ft Bell Tower at 6.00am (British Summer Time) on May morning, a tradition which dates back to 1504. The Tower, which houses ten bells, has recently been renovated. The Cloisters and Chapel are worth a visit. The college is open late morning to late afternoon, with an admission charge of £2.00 in high season. |
