The Martyrs' Memorial, designed by George Gilbert Scott, was constructed in 1841 "to the glory of God and the commemoration of His servants, Thomas Cranmer, Nicholas Ridley, Hugh Latimer, Prelates of the Church of England, who near this spot yielded their bodies to be burned". The three martyrs, who were burned at the stake outside Balliol College because their Protestant views did not find favour with the Catholic authorities of the time, are each protrayed on the monument; the statue of Cranmer faces North, Ridley East and Latimer West. The place of their execution is marked by a stone cross set in the road in the middle of Broad Street.
