There's just something about the Captain America movies which makes them just a tiny bit better than the rest from the movies from the Avengers world, and this is no exception.
I saw Captain America: Civil War AKA The Avengers 3 without Thor and Hulk and I thought it was really well done. It's so fascinating to see comic book movies tackle and explore the fall-out and impact from the previous storylines. I personally believe that the Marvel movies work well because they're set in a world we can relate to, because it's our world and not a made-up place. But they have super-villains doing this crazy power-hungry stuff and, in our real world, that would have a huge impact on global security and politics, and the communities dealing with the aftermath. The Marvel movies and TV shows (hats off particularly to Civil War, Iron Man 3 and Daredevil) aren't blind to that and they're tackling the issues of innocent lives lost, PTSD, vigilantes and all the fallout of big catastrophic events, incredibly well.
Yet, as well as asking those big questions, there are real personal journeys going on which makes the rift between the two groups completely believable. The marketing has all been about 'Whose side are you on?' whilst they cleverly play with your emotions so you end up being on both. You completely understand why Steve Rogers is upset that his best friend has been set-up, and you can relate completely to why he doesn't want to be controlled by the UN as he doesn't trust the powers that be. You also know exactly where Tony Stark is coming from having struggled with PTSD and now feeling the guilt of innocent lives on his bullet-proof iron shoulders. When the twist happens... well, that just cleverly throws even more emotion into the mix and suddenly the fact that these friends are fighting becomes heartbreaking.
It isn't perfect but then no comic book movie ever is. There were a lot of characters knocking about, including a couple of brand new ones and others borrowed from different movies, which makes the whole thing feel a bit ridiculous at times. There was also one moment that, as an non-American, had me rolling my eyes, and another moment which had me confused but, on the whole, I thought it was great and very entertaining. They got another Captain America movie pretty much spot on.
