Twenty Ten, New Road, Oxford. After my hairdresser unfortunately had to quit work due to illness I found myself unsure where to go, until a friend suggested I try Twenty Ten. Although a little nervous after years of the same hairdresser, I went along - and was so happy that I did. I was looked after by the lovely and very talented Louise. She made me feel completely at ease with her patience and good humour. I was more than pleased with the haircut and can't thank her enough. I will definitely recommend the salon to friends and sure to go back myself. Ann (Unverified), 18/04/12 Twenty Ten | New Road, Oxford After seeing the other reviews here for Twenty Ten I decided to take the plunge and book for a change of style. I was so glad that I chose this salon! My hair was cut by Holly who actually listened to what I wanted and made me look even better than I imagined. I will definitely return, the price was also so much cheaper than the other city centre salons I have used and I was left with a great feeling about my experience. Annie (Unverified), 04/04/12 Mahogany I've been here three times now and can't help but notice the illusory sense of 'professionalism' and 'trendiness' that conceal the true quality of the salon, which in my humble opinion is pretty average to be honest. Who wants to pay 42+ pounds (with student discount) for what is, essentially, a trim? C (Unverified), 21/03/12 Mahogany | Little Clarendon Street Back in the day, this was the place to go in Oxford. Well, after many years as a loyal customer, I recently decided that enough was enough. I’ve endured the constant price hikes and the increasingly inexperienced stylists, but there is a limit. I just think £55 for a cut from a newly qualified youngster is taking the **** - since for less than this you can have the salon director at Brothers or an art director at Philosophy). And - call me picky - but I think you should wait until the client has stood up before you pull the chair away, keen for them to leave. The good news is that unlike other great salons in Oxford (that I recently discovered) where you must book well in advance (months in advance for some stylists), you can walk into Mahogany on a Saturday and they’ll fit you in no bother. Go figure. Times have changed - and left Mahogany behind. Jas (Unverified), 13/03/12 Twenty Ten | 11 New Road, Oxford I have been looking for the PERFECT place to get my hair cut because I am insanely picky about my hair... I finally tried the Twenty Ten salon and was absolutely blown away. Louise is the director - her price is reasonable. She did EXACTLY what I asked, listened to everything I said and made suggestions to fit my face, personality, and style. I couldn't be happier. meli (Unverified), 10/02/12 Twenty Ten Hair Salon | New Road, Oxford Twenty Ten is a awesome addition to Oxford. It stands out from the other salons nearby because of the GREAT service and people who work there. And it is just a gorgeous and relaxing space to be in. The reception staff were very professional - great at accommodating my scheduling needs, great great price and Louise, who cut and colored my hair is amazing. She was friendly, very knowledgeable, and not afraid to give me feedback and style guidance (which I desperately wanted), a great listener, and a FANTASTIC hair designer. I felt great about my hair when I walked out the door, and I still feel great about it today. Highly recommended and absolutely worth every minute of my drive from Abingdon. hannah (Unverified), 07/02/12 Twenty Ten Hair Salon | New Road, Oxford I’ve only ever used barbers before but fancied a treat and went to TwentyTen and have never looked back. Everything is set up to make the customer to feel welcome. Short waiting times, free drink with your haircut and really friendly service. They also do amazing student offers. In terms of value for money this is easily the best place I have found in Oxford! Josh (Unverified), 07/02/12 Her Coif | Cowley Road Just had a great haircut, full head foil and treatment for only £75 at this new salon in Cowley Rd!!! The hairdresser was very nice and knew what she was doing and I was very happy with the price (very cheap compared to almost £180 I used to pay at salon in Summertown!!!) I would definitively recommend this salon to all my friends and family and can't wait for my manicure appointment next week :) ! It's a great place to get gorgeous for a very reasonable price! Dot 23 (DI User), 29/01/12 Twenty Ten Hair Salon | 11 New Road, Oxford | 01865 722555 First time I've been to a hair salon in about 2 years and only went here because I had a discount voucher, however, what a lovely place. Very friendly and not at all patronising. The girl who cut my hair, Holly, was lovely and really listened to what I wanted from my hair. I left with a really nice haircut, lots of advice on how to manage my hair at a fair and reasonable price and no pressure to make another appointment. I have every intention of going back again even without the incentive of dicount voucher. dena (Unverified), 25/01/12 Brothers | High Street, Oxford Delighted with the haircut I got at Brothers. It isn't the cheapest of options, but they do offer a 10% student discount. Previous hairdresser from elsewhere had ruined my hair with layers, but the Brothers hairdresser was extremely professional in advising and removed the layers into a long sleek bob exactly how I wanted it. Left feeling happy and would definitely recommend it! J (Unverified), 04/01/12 Leona's Salon | 291 Iffley Road, Oxford | 01865 201301 A new salon. Have discovered just by passing by. I have tried and liked it. I got an excellent haircut, I'm usually fussy about my hair, but the results were great!! Reasonable prices for a location. I have found a great place for a fantastic cut. Also very friendly salon. The hair wash is excellent as you get a mini head massage. Amanda (Unverified), 12/12/11 Her Coif | Cowley Road, Oxford I went there after reading the review here. The lady speaks little English so the man did the talking. I didn't get my hair washed before cutting and no blow dry or styling afterwards. Then the man asked me to pay the highest price on the menu - cut and finish £27 - so I asked what a wet cut was (£20 on the price list) and he said he didn't know. The haircut was not too bad but I am reluctant to go back there again. Gabriella (Unverified), 09/12/11 Toni and Guy | George St, Oxford It was good here several years ago - very slick and professional. On my last 2 visits however, my hairdresser constantly dashed away from my side as he was cutting to check over other stylist's efforts - and once, walked away to discuss something at the desk, again while I just sat there. On both occasions I was left waiting in reception for 15 minutes while he finished a previous client's hair. As I have a set appointment and am paying through the nose for Oxford parking this is unacceptable. Good cut, but hey I'm paying almost £50 for this! LizWatt (Unverified), 08/12/11 Twenty Ten Hair Salon | 11 New Road, Oxford | 01865 722555 I used to go to Mahogany to have my haircut & highlights done, but after spending at least £160 for each visit (cut & colour) I've decided to give another salon a go. That's when I decided to try Twenty Ten and I have to say that I've should have tried them a lot earlier. Michelle (Unverified), 05/12/11 Her Coif | Cowley Road, Oxford Just been there for first time (they have opened a month ago I think) and very pleased about my new cut and also the good price I have paid (£27). Would definitively go back and recommend to friends in future. EfromB (Unverified), 30/11/11 Oasis Hair and Beauty | Rose Hill, Oxford Just had a gorgeous haircut from Lynne. She set the salon up in December and it looks fresh. urban (DI User), 04/08/11 Fusion Hairdressers | Headington, Oxford I had my hair restyled by Gary and it was one of the best haircuts I have ever had. I went into the shop feeling very 'down' and dissatisfied at how I looked and when I left the shop I felt rejuvenated and ready to face the world. All the staff were friendly and professional, I will definitely return in the future. Sandie S (Unverified), 16/06/11 Popham | North Parade, Oxford I'm very happy with the haircut I got at Popham. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and the service is professional at the same time. My stylist listened to me, offered good advice and didn't rush my cut. sr2605 (Unverified), 07/05/11 Anne Veck Salon | St Clement's, Oxford Highly recommended. Offered excellent advice on how to repair the bad previous cut (more of that later) and I left with a beautiful mid length cut, feeling pampered. The team also create a relaxed, comfortable environment. urban (DI User), 27/03/11 Matthew Clulee Hair Spas | Central Oxford: 01865 722400, Headington: 01865 765358 A stylish and comfortable hairdressing salon where I got the perfect haircut, which I felt was fully justified by the price: thank you to my hairdresser there, who really took the time to understand exactly what I had in mind. I'd recommend this salon to anyone wanting a seriously good cut (sharp lines, good shaping, precision, etc.)- the look of my hair before and after reminded me of the difference between a cheaply made, shapeless dress and a well-tailored dress. Thank you! Aeterna (Unverified), 16/03/11 Popham | 1 North Parade, Oxford, OX2 6LX Fantastic cuts and colours and a relaxing atmosphere. Annie (Unverified), 07/02/11 Mahogany | Market Street, Oxford Interesting to read the comments about Mahoghany. I have been lucky enough to not only have a free colour there (by an experienced hairdresser fresh from Australia) which I was really pleased with, but I've also had a free cut there too (with coffee and a biscuit both times!). The cut admittedly did take a very long time to do but it looked good and I was very happy with result. Both times I've responded to ads on Gumtree but I have seen students asking people in the area if they'd like a free cut when I've been walking down Turl St. If you aren't in a rush I'd recommend it. Sue (Unverified), 12/12/10 Mahogany | Market Street, Oxford I'm in two minds about Mahogany as well. They are all pretty friendly in there. Nothing like the 'tude' you get when you go in to Toni & Guy! But it kind of bugs me when the hairdresser, who is meant to be a Senior Stylist, is only just older than me (I'm only 30) and charges £69 for a haircut! Still, if the haircut was exceptional, made me feel like a million bucks and lasted really well, it could be argued that it's money well spent. But... it just isn't. I have had a few pretty unexceptional haircuts in there. One was so bad I had to go back in and ask her to sort it out. She was very sweet and gracious about it, so that's something, but still, all I want is someone who can cut my hair the way it needs to be cut! livicus (DI User), 09/12/10 Mahogany | Market Street, Oxford I am in two minds about this hairdressers'. I have been going there for a while but may try something new. I think it is too expensive for me now; £59 for what is basically a trim in my case and if you have your hair coloured that is £120, which is pricey! However the hairdresser did blowdry it really well and used straighteners on it to enhance my waves and curls but make it smooth and shiny at the same time - no mean feat as I have the thickest coarsest hair you can imagine. Esme (Unverified), 13/11/10 Fiona's Hair and Beauty | 493 Marston Road, Marston, Oxford OX3 0JQ I am not a local, but often have to travel to Oxford. Whenever possible I make a point of going to get my hair cut at Fiona's Hair. The staff are wonderful, very friendly but professional, always happy to see me and they even remember my name. I leave there with a natural high. Billy-Bob (Unverified), 29/10/10 Leona's Salon | 291 Iffley Road, Oxford | 01865 201301 A beautiful, fresh looking salon. Super economical prices. I really felt comfortable talking to Leona, as she really understood the cut I wanted and followed it up with a fantastic set of highlites. And I think she gave me one of the most perfect blowdrys. Keep it up. Lucy (Unverified), 30/08/10 Leona's Salon | 291 Iffley Road, Oxford | 01865 201301 I went there for my Haircut & Touchup with Leona. I think she really takes care to understand your personality and suggests what will actually suit your personality. I had a wonderful haircut and a fantastic blowdry, which was better than all the salons I have been to before in Oxford,I would really recommend Leona to any person who needs a good and understanding hairdresser. stella (Unverified), 21/08/10 Anne Veck Salon | St Clement's, Oxford I had a great experience here. I dyed my hair dark red (after being a blonde my entire life) and the staff were great in explaining everything to me and taking the time to go through my options. I also had my hair styled here for a ball, and the stylist was great. She took extra time (without charging me) to add more curls, when I asked. The best part was that they still looked great the next day, even after dancing all night and sleeping on them. Amanda (Unverified), 16/07/10 Brother's | High Street, Oxford I had my haircut at Brother's today with Carol (Director) - so fast, professional, and lovely! Total cost was 50 pounds (wash, cut, blowdry, straighten). I had very long hair and Carol was attentive and I ended up with a lovely haircut and a wonderful experience. Kris (Unverified), 18/06/10 Leona's Salon | 291 Iffley Road, Oxford | 01865 201301 I had a cut at Leona's (Iffley Road, Oxford) - Leona is simply awesome! Has the perfect balance of friendly and professional. She cut it exactly as I asked and was quick and brilliant. Stylish but not pretentious and it cost less than most places in Oxford. I'd really recommend it. I think Leonas is simply the best!!!! Alison Nobbs (Unverified), 05/06/10 Fiona's Hair and Beauty | 493 Marston Road, Marston, Oxford OX3 0JQ Highlights are fine - but sadly I had the worst haircut of my whole life there. Dis-jointed, wonky, helmet-like nightmare. Hideous. sadhairday (Unverified), 20/04/10 Chameleon | 17 Cowley Road, Oxford OX4 1HP | 01865 200988 Chameleon has been on Cowley Road for most of the years I've been in Oxford and I've had my mop of long, greying hair trimmed pretty regularly by James, a hairdresser who understands the most important things about my attitude to hair: I don't want to see him very often (though he's very nice); I don't want to do layers; I don't want anything 'soft' or 'interesting'; since I swim three times a week, the only colour I'll be changing to is greenish if you add chemicals; and most importantly, all my pretty long hair had to come off at some point. The point came today, when I had about a foot in length (and about half a kilo in weight) taken off and James did himself absolutely proud. He cuts beautifully, has a keen eye for balance, doesn't badger you into conversation (which I'm rubbish at), is lightning fast and really, really reasonable - £30 for a haircut which left me feeling like a totally new person felt like the best money I've spent in years! I'm not sorry to be leaving Oxford, but if I could sneak James into my suitcase I would! Anna (Unverified), 20/03/10 Fiona's Hair and Beauty | 493 Marston Road, Oxford OX3 0JQ | 01865 246492 Excellent service, friendly staff, good haircuts (haven't tried highlights yet but will do so soon!). And all of this for a very reasonable price (£26 today for washing, cutting and styling). Claudia (Unverified), 28/11/09 Fiona's Hair and Beauty | 493 Marston Road, Oxford OX3 0JQ | 01865 246492 I have tried many places for gents' haircuts but Fiona's is one of the best places I have been to. The staff are excellent - they take their time and put effort into your hair, not like some other places, and it's cheap - £10 for a standard gents' haircut! I had the cut and wash for £15 - brilliant it was. :) Zakir (FAZ) (DI User), 22/01/09 Fiona's Hair and Beauty | 493 Marston Road, Marston, Oxford OX3 0JQ This place used to be called 'Mccords'. I got back from there today after many visits over the last year and a half - and again, I am happy with my hair! VickyNewHair (DI User), 11/01/09 David Popham | 1 North Parade, Oxford I loved the experience at Popham. The stylist first asked me how often I wash my hair, how I like to wear my hair, etc., in a friendly and non-judgemental manner. She even asked me what kind of shampoo I use at home so that she can select the right kind of hair products for me at the salon. The strong and pleasant impressions I got from her were that the stylists at Popham are very conscientious about how you treat your own hair. They respect *your* decisions and *your* preferences regarding *your* hair. They are there to help you create a nice, manageable haircut that's suitable for your lifestyle - the one you can keep it in a good shape until the next visit. HT (DI User), 13/12/08 Mahogany | Market Street, Oxford I went to Mahogany's hair salon for a half head of highlites. It was a really good experience and would recommend them to all my friends too. ochi (Unverified), 21/11/08 Pam's Hairdressers | Wallingford Community Hospital, Reading Road, Wallingford | 01491 825277 I didn't even know this salon existed until a friend told me she goes there. I would have thought it was only for patients but I stand corrected. It's a quiet little salon in the community hospital which does get very busy and it is really friendly. As far as I can gather, the staff all work part time so the salon is open certain hours Monday to Saturday. I have had my hair cut and blow dried by two different staff members now and have been really pleased with what they had both done. It is so cheap as well. They have OAP prices all week. It's the only time I've admitted my age and it was worth it. Henny, Benson, (Unverified), 09/10/08 Mahogany | Turl Street, Oxford I did not have a too bad experience in Mahogany the first time I went a few months ago. The hairdresser was friendly and had a good idea of what I should have done on my hair and would look good on me. Unfortunately, I was not ready to be adventurous and only had a regular haircut which was ok. mary (Unverified), 14/08/08 Mahogany | 30 Little Clarendon Street, Oxford | 01865 552494 I had the most diabolical experience at this hairdressers back in February. In fairness the cut was quite good but the cost was very high. When you pay a substantial sum for a haircut you do not expect the following things to happen. Sally Tilley (Unverified), 07/08/08 Akmal Hairdressers | Corner of Leopold Street and Cowley Road, Oxford Cheap and cheerful. Only £5.00 ibbs (Unverified), 17/06/08 Fusion Hairdressers | 97 London Road, Headington, OX3 9AE | (01865) 762002 I would be the first to admit that hairdressers scare the living highlights out of me. I don't do the whole 'styling' thing either, and people who know me have frankly just got used to the whole 'just-got-out-of-bed' look. Or are mostly too polite to mention it. Mostly. Isabel Owen (DI Reviewer), 10/06/08 Anne Veck | St Clements, Oxford | 0870 0628927 I had a cut in Anne Veck - they were awesome! Perfect balance of friendly and professional. They cut it exactly as I asked and were quick and brilliant. Stylish but not pretentious and it cost less than most places in Oxford. I'd really recommend it. Rosie (Unverified), 24/05/08 MOD 31 | 47 Stert St, Abingdon OX14 3JF | 0800 458 1197 Excellent, had colour & cut, really friendly staff. rosanne (DI User), 17/02/08 The Men's Room | 7 Cowley Road, Oxford | 01865 242555 This was my fourth haircut at The Men’s Room in about a year. Previous to that I had not had a shop haircut since 1990, so you may assume that I am naturally suspicious of the experience. 15/10/07 Anne Veck | St Clements, Oxford | 0870 0628927 Anne Veck on St Clements ("Your Hair, Our Passion") has a snazzy frontage in a shade of deep yellow that encourages change without demanding it. So I stuck with my natural caution and only had a trim with a bit of layering. While possibly not the best place for those who prefer statements to hair, it's good for people such as myself who want to be reassured that the staff are aiming to make the customer's hair look as good as possible rather than being the latest in avante garde sculpture. Minnie the Muncher (Unverified), 13/03/07 Cowboymod Emporium | 33 Walton Street, Oxford | 01865 554241 If you've tried Tony and Guy and are tired of their haircut of the month then you must try out the Cowboymod haircut man on Walton Street. If you want undivided attention with a cup of tea and the papers thrown in then this is the place for you. This place is a cross between an art gallery, a big boys' toyshop and pampering shop for big girls with cash to spend. Plus you get the added bonus of talking to 'James' about his previous life as a photographer for the likes of Oasis and Morrisey. Scratch the surface and you will find a really interesting guy with a good story. By the way it's next to Raouls cocktail bar. Be prepared to sit on a saddle. You'll love it. I did. Went back and got my hair dyed last week. et (Unverified), 06/03/07 Essensuals | High Street, Oxford | 01865 244888 Essensuals hair salon has a young, fresh, pop vibe with only funky, choppy, up-to-the-minute hairdos being allowed to leave the building. The salon's mission is to customise high fashion to fit the face and lifestyle of each individual client. Stylists scour the catwalks for the latest trends so you don't have to, and have a collection of hot styles at their finger tips so there is no need to worry if you can't explain what you want but are searching for a hot new look. At the heart of the Toni and Guy experience is the consultation. These are offered free of charge along with a follow-up fringe cut. My stylist (Jess) gets the honest truth out of me about how little time I spend on hair maintenance. This prevents grungy hair slobs like myself walking out with a high maintenance 'Setty Betty'. Jess tailors a hair care regime to suit my hair type (thin) and offers styling advice to best maintain my new hairdo (a long choppy bob). The tactical use of a metal cylindrical brush along with a slick of 'After Party' cream transforms me into a Holly Oaks babe (well nearly!) and I am ready to go-go! High fashion is rarely as cheap as chips but Essensuals have stylists to suit all pockets, (from £37 to £49); with 10% off for NUS cardholders Monday thro' Wednesday. To get the most out of your new cut, salon products are recommended but not pushed on you. 'Bed Head' is a popular and goof proof range, and I can certify 'Health Goddess' then 'Control Freak', both sprayed on towel-dried hair, do what they says on the tin. Catwalk 'Oatmeal and Honey' shampoo and conditioner adds volume and brings my thin hair back from the dead. If you try some reverse psychology and ask an assistant if they are going anywhere nice on holiday, you are more likely to hear tales about a white water rafting trip down under than a time-share in Marbella. Nowadays, getting a hair cut is merely dipping your toe in the water. The wild and wacky hairstyles sported by salon staff encourage you to take the plunge and splash out and go technicolour yourself; try stripes, streaks and slices of this season's shades. If you want to be in the cool gang try a burst of Inno Via 'Sea Salt Spray' for surf chick hair. With their own magazine, TV channel, and three ranges of 'off the hook' salon products the two Mascolo brothers (aka Toni & Guy) are taking over the High Street and the future's choppy! Lita Doolan (DI Reviewer), 20/06/05 Matthew Clulee Hair Spas | Central Oxford: 01865 722400, Headington: 01865 765358 How refreshing to have at long last discovered a hairdressers in Oxford that not only offers a friendly and personal service, but one that actually takes the time to listen to what you want. Until I discovered Matthew Clulee Hair Spas, a visit to the hairdressers was about as enjoyable as a trip to the dentist for root canal treatment. Normally a confident and outgoing person, I would find myself reduced to vague nods and the inability to communicate by intimidating hairdressers who seemed intent on giving me a style I was never going to manage to replicate on my own. Having heard some resounding compliments and very positive comments about the team at Matthew Clulee, I ventured there for the first time over a year ago. After numerous visits I have to admit that I've never once been disappointed by the cuts, colouring or service I've received. I even look forward to my visits to the hairdressers now as the whole experience is relaxing, enjoyable and I know I'm going to come out feeling and looking like a million dollars! With a salon in Headington and one in Ship Street in the city centre (just up the road opposite Austin Reed and next to Russell & Bromley), Matthew Clulee is clearly getting things right. Both premises are ultra cool and combine the chic atmosphere with the polite and friendly service and you're guaranteed to come away feeling you've got value for your money. The entire team at Matthew Clulee seem to take a great deal of pride in their personal service. Whether you're with a junior stylist or Matthew himself, you really enjoy a non-rushed, personal treatment that leaves you confident in their ability and happy with the result. I'm also extremely excited that Matthew's just opened a fabulous new beauty suite in the city centre salon and having tried and tested a number of treatments (which include manicures, pedicures, waxing, tanning and facials) I'm pleased to say the fantastic service extends to this new venture! A big thank you and well done to all at Matthew Clulee Hair Spas!
Sarah Fielding (Unverified), 24/01/05 Mahogany | 30 Little Clarendon Street, Oxford | 01865 552494 If, like me, the very word hairdresser strikes terror into your heart, and you are reduced to a trembling idiot on walking into the shiny, mirror-encrusted interior of the hair salon, then do not fear, for this is the place for you. Mahogany might be a busy, trendy haircutting centre, but it also manages to cater for the hairdressing coward such as myself who requires gentle handling at all stages of the ordeal.
