Very friendly and not at all patronising. The girl who cut my hair, Holly, was lovely and really listened to what I wanted from my hair. I left with a really nice haircut, lots of advice on how to manage my hair at a fair and reasonable price and no pressure to make another appointment. The lady speaks little English so the man did the talking. I didn't get my hair washed before cutting and no blow dry or styling afterwards. Then the man asked me to pay the highest price on the menu - cut and finish £27 - so I asked what a wet cut was (£20 on the price list) and he said he didn't know. The haircut was not too bad but I am reluctant to go back there again. On my last 2 visits however, my hairdresser constantly dashed away from my side as he was cutting to check over other stylist's efforts - and once, walked away to discuss something at the desk, again while I just sat there. As I have a set appointment and am paying through the nose for Oxford parking this is unacceptable. Good cut, but hey I'm paying almost £50 for this! That's when I decided to try Twenty Ten and I have to say that I've should have tried them a lot earlier. Not only that the location could not be any better, but for a City Centre hairdresser salon, the prices are exceptionally affordable. The staff have very good customer service skills and the hairdressers are highly recommendable to anyone who takes a lot of pride in their appearance. Lynne knows her stuff when it comes to working out a style that fits and executing a cut. Mine's now a long bob softened towards the ends. The lady next door to me had a lovely cut, blow dry and straighten too. Lynn and I ended up chatting and laughing, a lovely surprise because I tend to be a bit nervous in a hairdresser's chair. Another good points is the location, just nip around the ring road from the business park or walk from Littlemore if you work at the hospital. It's inside the ring road, but not central Oxford, so the prices are reasonable and you can park there. Lovely haircut, advice and vibe. I went into the shop feeling very 'down' and dissatisfied at how I looked and when I left the shop I felt rejuvenated and ready to face the world. The team also create a relaxed, comfortable environment. Give Leona's a miss though. The senior lady seemed rushed - I felt she ignored my chosen style and did her own thing despite my chipping in. I left with heavy unblended layers that to me looked "wiggy". I'd recommend this salon to anyone wanting a seriously good cut (sharp lines, good shaping, precision, etc.)- the look of my hair before and after reminded me of the difference between a cheaply made, shapeless dress and a well-tailored dress. I decided to try Popham after five years of good cuts and colours at Mahogany. In total I have been three times to Popham now and have been extremely pleased with the results. I have had two cuts (Nikki) and two colours (half-head of blonde highlights: Tara). The overall experience was excellent. The atmosphere is relaxed but professional. The stylists take plenty of time to work out exactly what you are looking for, and how it will fit with your lifestyle. I would say that both cuts and colours have been the best I can remember. The prices are not much lower than Mahogany (check on the Popham website for more details), but the cuts are good. I found that the attitude of the staff mades the experience a lot less intimidating for me than at Mahogany. Unfortunately I am leaving Oxford, just as I have found the most amazing hairdressers on my doorstep! Annie (Unverified), 07/02/11 Interesting to read the comments about Mahoghany. I have been lucky enough to not only have a free colour there (by an experienced hairdresser fresh from Australia) which I was really pleased with, but I've also had a free cut there too (with coffee and a biscuit both times!) The cut admittedly did take a very long time to do but it looked good and I was very happy with result. Both times I've responded to ads on Gumtree but I have seen students asking people in the area if they'd like a free cut when I've been walking down Turl St. If you aren't in a rush I'd recommend it. Still, if the haircut was exceptional, made me feel like a million bucks and lasted really well, it could be argued that it's money well spent. But... it just isn't. I have had a few pretty unexceptional haircuts in there. One was so bad I had to go back in and ask her to sort it out. She was very sweet and gracious about it, so that's something, but still, all I want is someone who can cut my hair the way it needs to be cut! *sigh*. I think it is too expensive for me now; £59 for what is basically a trim in my case and if you have your hair coloured that is £120, which is pricey! However the hairdresser did blowdry it really well and used straighteners on it to enhance my waves and curls but make it smooth and shiny at the same time - no mean feat as I have the thickest coarsest hair you can imagine. One thing that does rile me is that I get offered tea or coffee about 3 or 4 times - when I arrive, before I go to have my hair washed, after that, etc but even though I say yes I never actually received the elusive cup. Whenever possible I make a point of going to get my hair cut at Fiona's Hair. The staff are wonderful, very friendly but professional, always happy to see me and they even remember my name. I leave there with a natural high. I have never had a bad hair cut there; I've even taken my wife & children. According to them Fiona even does hair extensions now! Always using real hair at a price that's hard to believe! Fiona's offer the best price we've seen for extensions! The best part was that they still looked great the next day, even after dancing all night and sleeping on them. Rosy (Unverified), 19/04/10 Chameleon, 17 Cowley Rd, OX4 1HP, 01865 200988 Chameleon has been on Cowley Road for most of the years I've been in Oxford and I've had my mop of long, greying hair trimmed pretty regularly by James, a hairdresser who understands the most important things about my attitude to hair: I don't want to see him very often (though he's very nice); I don't want to do layers; I don't want anything 'soft' or 'interesting'; since I swim three times a week, the only colour I'll be changing to is greenish if you add chemicals; and most importantly, all my pretty long hair had to come off at some point. The point came today, when I had about a foot in length (and about half a kilo in weight) taken off and James did himself absolutely proud. He cuts beautifully, has a keen eye for balance, doesn't badger you into conversation (which I'm rubbish at), is lightning fast and really, really reasonable - £30 for a haircut which left me feeling like a totally new person felt like the best money I've spent in years! I'm not sorry to be leaving Oxford, but if I could sneak James into my suitcase I would! I got back from there today after many visits over the last year and a half - and again, I am happy with my hair! I tried several places in Oxford - Mahoganys etc, before I saw this place near where I live. It is significantly cheaper than everywhere else in Oxford and they do a great job. I go in for highlights and cuts and they usually spend at least of couple hours - they take the time and make the effort and it does not cost a lot. Cut costs about £21. Half head highlights £45 and they have a beautician that does all services - facials, makeup, manicures etc. All at very reasonable prices. I have been there many times and it really is great to go to a hairdressers that does not rip you off and you come out with a decent look. The new owner is also a very decent person and a good hairdresser herself! The other people that have worked on my hair before were also very good. It is on bus routes (I live walkable distance so I am lucky!) so it is no further to go than into town. Highly recommended! The stylist first asked me how often I wash my hair, how I like to wear my hair, etc., in a friendly and non-judgemental manner. She even asked me what kind of shampoo I use at home so that she can select the right kind of hair products for me at the salon. The strong and pleasant impressions I got from her were that the stylists at Popham are very conscientious about how you treat your own hair. They respect *your* decisions and *your* preferences regarding *your* hair. They are there to help you create a nice, manageable haircut that's suitable for your lifestyle - the one you can keep it in a good shape until the next visit. I was very happy with the cut, and liked that the salon was bright and had an open atmosphere. The price was alright - wasn't as high as some other places (they have student discount as well). It was a really good experience and would recommend them to all my friends too. They took time to dicuss what colour I wanted and what they thought would suit me. They made me feel very comfortable and gave me a choice of magazines and offered me hot or cold drinks of which i chose a cappuccino which was delicious and beautifully presented with some nice biscuits. I left the salon feeling great and totally loved my new hair colour and the best part was i didn't have to pay a single penny as the lady who did it was due to start working for Mahogany's and before she started she had to do a certain number of colours to ensure that she had the right skills etc to work for them. (01491) 825277 I didn't even know this salon existed until a friend told me she goes there. I would have thought it was only for patients but I stand corrected. It's a quiet little salon in the community hospital which does get very busy and it is really friendly. As far as I can gather, the staff all work part time so the salon is open certain hours Monday to Saturday. I have had my hair cut and blow dried by two different staff members now and have been really pleased with what they had both done. It is so cheap as well. They have OAP prices all week. I did not have a too bad experience in Mahogany the first time I went a few months ago. The hairdresser was friendly and had a good idea of what I should have done on my hair and would look good on me. Unfortunately, I was not ready to be adventurous and only had a regular haircut which was ok. The second time I went I was looking for exactly that, I was tired of my hairstyle and wanted a change, but I was not sure which way I wanted to go. I was taken by a young lady who seem more interested in how SHE was looking than how I was looking. She did not have any suggestions to what I could have done to my hair, seem completly uninterested and asked me constantly if cutting here or there was ok, as if she did not know what she was doing. She was obviously not very experienced. All and all I still paid £55 for my haircut. That made me a bit frustrated and even more indecisive of what I wanted done. When she realised that I was not sure and she did not have any suggestions, she rushed me out of the shop, my hair still wet while she was talking to the next customer. I hated my haircut and I felt like a chicken in a battery farm. She suggested that I came back another day for a new consultation but, honestly, who is going to go back and say that because you did not have a good haircut on Saturday, you wanted another go for free? When you pay a substantial sum for a haircut you do not expect the following things to happen. Firstly, my hairdresser left me waiting for 15 minutes. I was asked if I would like tea but never got a cup. When my cut commenced she abandoned me mid sentence on three occasions to go and speak to other clients. I would be the first to admit that hairdressers scare the living highlights out of me. I don't do the whole 'styling' thing either, and people who know me have frankly just got used to the whole 'just-got-out-of-bed' look. Or are mostly too polite to mention it. Mostly. But I also can never resist the adventurous, exotic or downright wacky. A hairdresser with an outdoor cafe, cocktails and internet terminals? Sign me up. So, what was it like? Well, firstly, and most importantly, the hair cut was good. Very, very good. I'm one of those awkward customers too, who have absolutely no idea what they want but will be miffed if they don't get it. So, we started with a consultation session. Gary quickly established that I wanted a zero-hassle, professional looking cut. Then he did some serious thinking, studying the craziness that is my hair and talking me through what lengths would suit the shape of my face. All the cuts there are done wet (wash and drying are included in all the prices), which normally would annoy me as I like to get these things over with quickly. I'm not sure what chilled me out this time - I think it might have been the fact that the wash included an Indian head massage, and a very nice massage chair... Either way, it was a cunning plan because I was relaxed to the point of happy-stupor by the time the actual cutting bit came round, and was quiet as a lamb. This may only seem a small thing to you, but the other thing I liked was that the magazines stacked everywhere were really varied. While I get a guilty, junk-food kind of pleasure from reading rubbish magazines, its really nice to have a choice of decent ones too for when you get bored of searching in vain for evidence of some Z-list celebrity's cellulite/underwear/intellect (delete as appropriate). Or reading some breathless 'I-lost-20-kilos-in-a-week-and-found-love' story. Followed immediately, of course, by 'How my anorexia nightmare destroyed my self-esteem and my marriage'. Anyway. The cafe, supplied with food and drink from Squash [see Daily Info's reviews here], looked o.k., basically pretty normal as cafes go. I suppose the big advantage would be that you could take a child/friend/boyfriend etc with you while you got your hair done and leave them happily, in sight, no doubt peering intently at a magazine (Biro in hand) and pigging out on the food and drink. Being penniless, the big downside is really the prices. The top stylist, Gary, charges up to £55 for a restyle. Having said that, though, you can also get cuts from £15 if you don't mind having a "model's cut", which is incidentally not a set style, as I always imagined, but is any style, done by a junior (trained) stylist and then checked at the end by the boss. Plus, I'm told that there is a 30% discount for NUS students and NHS staff on certain days. But basically, the big issue for me is that now when I wake up in the morning I can pull a comb through my hair and make it look just like it did in the salon. And how often can you say that? Previous to that I had not had a shop haircut since 1990, so you may assume that I am naturally suspicious of the experience. Of the four, three have been done by the same lady, who I believe is in charge of the place. They have all been of the same high standard. One, by a young chap with whom I had communication difficulties, was, not awful, but not quite right. A gentleman’s scissor cut costs £12.50 and takes about 30-40 minutes. Or maybe a little less. It certainly seems, when waiting in the queue, that the stylists are a little too thorough and painstaking. But once you are the subject, it’s reassuring that they take it slowly, and frequently check that everything is on course. I’m not sure what else can be said. The atmosphere is friendly and very unpretentious, the armchairs for waiting are very comfy, the lads’ mags suitably scurrilous. It’s all surprisingly painless. And, this last time, the lady agreed to extend her shift when she found out I was waiting specifically for her. All good. 15/10/07 Anne Veck on St Clements, Oxford 0870 0628927 Anne Veck on St Clements ("Your Hair, Our Passion") has a snazzy frontage in a shade of deep yellow that encourages change without demanding it. So I stuck with my natural caution and only had a trim with a bit of layering. While possibly not the best place for those who prefer statements to hair, it's good for people such as myself who want to be reassured that the staff are aiming to make the customer's hair look as good as possible rather than being the latest in avante garde sculpture. The staff are friendly without being sycophantic and your personal one sticks with you all the way through (one thing I hate about High Street hairdressers is the way you're shunted like a package through a production line of different operatives). Lots of consultation and they did exactly what I wanted, which is, after all, what it's all about. I mentioned I was thinking of getting my hair dyed and was presented with several free sample packets of a super-conditioner to use BEFORE taking this step. I really liked the way they planned ahead for me like that. I also left with a small bottle of shampoo which I possibly didn't need as much as I thought at the time: it wasn't a hard sales pitch, I just have a weakness for girly products. Someone with average sales resistance would be fine. If you want undivided attention with a cup of tea and the papers thrown in then this is the place for you. This place is a cross between an art gallery, a big boys' toyshop and pampering shop for big girls with cash to spend. Plus you get the added bonus of talking to 'James' about his previous life as a photographer for the likes of Oasis and Morrisey. Scratch the surface and you will find a really interesting guy with a good story. By the way it's next to Raouls cocktail bar. Be prepared to sit on a saddle. You'll love it. I did. Essensuals hair salon has a young, fresh, pop vibe with only funky, choppy, up-to-the-minute hairdos being allowed to leave the building. The salon's mission is to customise high fashion to fit the face and lifestyle of each individual client. Stylists scour the catwalks for the latest trends so you don't have to, and have a collection of hot styles at their finger tips so there is no need to worry if you can't explain what you want but are searching for a hot new look. At the heart of the Toni and Guy experience is the consultation. These are offered free of charge along with a follow-up fringe cut. My stylist (Jess) gets the honest truth out of me about how little time I spend on hair maintenance. This prevents grungy hair slobs like myself walking out with a high maintenance 'Setty Betty'. Jess tailors a hair care regime to suit my hair type (thin) and offers styling advice to best maintain my new hairdo (a long choppy bob). The tactical use of a metal cylindrical brush along with a slick of 'After Party' cream transforms me into a Holly Oaks babe (well nearly!) and I am ready to go-go! High fashion is rarely as cheap as chips but Essensuals have stylists to suit all pockets, (from £37 to £49); with 10% off for NUS cardholders Monday thro' Wednesday. To get the most out of your new cut, salon products are recommended but not pushed on you. 'Bed Head' is a popular and goof proof range, and I can certify 'Health Goddess' then 'Control Freak', both sprayed on towel-dried hair, do what they says on the tin. Catwalk 'Oatmeal and Honey' shampoo and conditioner adds volume and brings my thin hair back from the dead. If you try some reverse psychology and ask an assistant if they are going anywhere nice on holiday, you are more likely to hear tales about a white water rafting trip down under than a time-share in Marbella. Nowadays, getting a hair cut is merely dipping your toe in the water. Until I discovered Matthew Clulee Hair Spas, a visit to the hairdressers was about as enjoyable as a trip to the dentist for root canal treatment. Normally a confident and outgoing person, I would find myself reduced to vague nods and the inability to communicate by intimidating hairdressers who seemed intent on giving me a style I was never going to manage to replicate on my own. Having heard some resounding compliments and very positive comments about the team at Matthew Clulee, I ventured there for the first time over a year ago. After numerous visits I have to admit that I've never once been disappointed by the cuts, colouring or service I've received. I even look forward to my visits to the hairdressers now as the whole experience is relaxing, enjoyable and I know I'm going to come out feeling and looking like a million dollars! With a salon in Headington and one in Ship Street in the city centre (just up the road opposite Austin Reed and next to Russell & Bromley), Matthew Clulee is clearly getting things right. Both premises are ultra cool and combine the chic atmosphere with the polite and friendly service and you're guaranteed to come away feeling you've got value for your money. The entire team at Matthew Clulee seem to take a great deal of pride in their personal service. Whether you're with a junior stylist or Matthew himself, you really enjoy a non-rushed, personal treatment that leaves you confident in their ability and happy with the result. I'm also extremely excited that Matthew's just opened a fabulous new beauty suite in the city centre salon and having tried and tested a number of treatments (which include manicures, pedicures, waxing, tanning and facials) I'm pleased to say the fantastic service extends to this new venture! Tel: 552494 If, like me, the very word hairdresser strikes terror into your heart, and you are reduced to a trembling idiot on walking into the shiny, mirror-encrusted interior of the hair salon, then do not fear, for this is the place for you. Mahogany might be a busy, trendy haircutting centre, but it also manages to cater for the hairdressing coward such as myself who requires gentle handling at all stages of the ordeal. Those impossibly cool people who always inhabit hair salons are not by any means as intimidating once you get inside, turning out to be normal humans who are friendly, unpatronising and helpful and who, most importantly, made me feel welcome. I had a cut and finish with Luke. He calmly and efficiently dealt with my disobliging hair and proceeded to banish the persitent split ends and shape it into a sleek layered style. When I admitted my ineptitude with all things hair-related, and my consistent inability to crack the glamorous hair secret, he told me to get a good shampoo, and showed me how to apply that gloss and even how to hold the hairdryer. He also went to the trouble to straighten my wavy hair, a thing I had not believed possible and which was astonishingly successful. Furthermore, the service is excellent, with tea, coffee (comes with proper little coffee-shop biscuits) and mineral water available on request. The salon itself is small and very personal, and there is always someone around to help you out. This must be the first time ever that I have actually enjoyed a visit to the hairdresser. This may be, according to Elle magazine ‘one of the top five colour hairdressing salons in the UK’, but it certainly manages to avoid the pretension that should accompany this accolade. They’ll cut your hair wonderfully, and are human along with it. I left with that ‘just stepped out of a salon’ feeling, and will certainly step in again. Definitely the place to go in Oxford....
