I've just finished watching this movie on Cable. The little boy, Tommy Rettig is probably the most adorable actor to have graced movies or TV including The Lassie Show as Timmy. A multi-talented actor and singer even at his so very young age. This movie is certainly worth watching once. It is near bizzare but hoofed out, sung out, and decked out as professionally as any other major musical ever was. The dream story is truly surreal. Metropolis meets Dr. Zuess. The songs are Danny Kaye silly and often hillarious, my favorites being The Terwilliger School of Music alma mater song and the Dress Me song sung by Dr. Terwilliger himself on Opening Day. Early 1950s possible influences portrayed in the movie are the 'atomic'age and the new age of modern dance. This is the beginning of an artistic shift in the USA to 'modern' illustrated here in a wild dance done by the prisoners of the Terwilliger School of Music. Did this unique movie influence things to come? A truly weird and fun film. The best part of course was THE HAT. OH, THE HAT! I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!
