If you are not familiar with the eight films which have gone before this latest offering, I suggest you start from the beginning. Rent "Dark Star", whence the idea for "Alien" originally came, then watch the four "Alien" films, followed by the two "Predator"s, and finally the first "Alien vs. Predator". In other words, don't bother with this one unless you've at least seen the first AVP; it will make very little sense.
That's not to say that this makes all that much sense anyway, but if you can suspend disbelief enough to believe that an alien spacecraft can crash in rural America and that all manner of nasty carnage will ensue, it proves an entertaining way to spend an hour and a half.
There is a reasonable attempt at characterisation, and the remnants of a plot, although the motives of the Predator protagonist are sketchy and unclear. If you have watched the other "Alien" films and idly speculated what would happen if this occurred in a populated area of Earth then this is an answer to that, and the hybrid alien provides an interesting diversion from the usual xenomorph behaviours which made at least one of my companions squirm and say something about never wanting children.
All in all this is probably an unnecessary addition to the original canon but nevertheless diverting enough, unintentionally funny in places and not long enough to get boring. If you're an avid fan, rush to the cinema, if not, wait til it comes out on DVD.
