If you’re ever going to see Iron Man, see it for Robert Downey Jr. That is reason enough! He’s the epitome of understated cool and looking a lot sexier, what with his taut new under eyes and his ability to assemble weapons out of tinfoil. Gwyneth's role could have gone to anyone, she hardly features, except when she has to mince around in impossible heels. The rest of the cast remains unmemorable.
The film itself just doesn't have enough substance (and I'm not talking character development). There are one too many pointless scenes, and not enough suspense building up to the finale. Though the special effects during the fight scenes are engaging. As a whole, this film is enjoyable certainly, but not in that, 'hurray-my-favourite-super-hero-has-come-to-life" kinda way. I mean, did we even know who Iron Man was before the movie came out? Or have I just offended even the most amateur superhero aficionados? SJDM, 22/05/08 Well, another superhero movie! I am not very au fait with the world of superheroes, having never read a comic so as to resist that most feared label of 'geek'. I did manage to get into this film, much to my surprise. There was not much of a story (arms manufacturer has a sudden attack of conscience, then for some reason invents a cooler than cool iron suit to kick the baddies with. Afghans in this case...how modern!) but it really doesn't matter as you can enjoy the flying and fight scenes regardless of the reasons why. Gwyneth Paltrow seems to have ditched her ice queen image and appears quite attractive as Pepper Potts (love that name) while Robert Downey Jr. does lend some weight to the 'conscience' storyline, his party lifestyle history reflecting the balance of morals encountered by Stark himself. And it was infinitely superior to Spiderman 3. NeoN, 04/05/08 |
