Do you know where Tony Blair smoked his last cigarette? Or what are the three telltale signs of an Oxford prostitute? Or how you can get an Oxford degree without sitting a single exam? Neither did I, until I tried Richard Smith’s Eccentric Oxford Tour. This isn't one of the street-clogging, date-spewing, tourist-wallet-draining tours that you see moving at the speed of an arthritic snail down the middle of Broad Street. This is an erudite, intimate and fascinating look at the hidden side of Oxford and its history, ideal for longtime residents and visitors alike.

Richard is an absolute goldmine of information about the city- and you never feel that he’s simply following a predetermined route or reeling out a memorised script, either. The tour sparkles with fascinating digressions, additions, and personal touches. It’s a little like chatting with a mix of Stephen Fry and Columbo- “Just one more thing about Shelley’s second expulsion from Oxford…” And I really do emphasise chatting- it might just be a feature of the intimate size of the group (about 10 on my tour), but Richard’s style is very personal- he even managed to summon up an individual Oxford fact for each member of the tour! An Australian visitor, for example, was informed that both Sydney and Melbourne Universities were founded by dons expelled from Oxford (for marrying, in case you were wondering. Women, not each other).

Richard’s an excellent guide, although his style definitely benefits from the small size of the group- he’s an expert, not a showman, and that means sometimes the fun comes from the facts, not how they’re presented. But he’s certainly a friendly, funny chap, and very easy to talk to- he clearly delights in answering questions about any obscure corner of Oxford. Finally, I know who he weird Woody Allen-esque gargoyle in Teddy Hall is!

The tour was relatively short and moved slowly enough that all the party could easily keep up (even my 80-year-old grandparents) but we still managed to take in a dozen or so points of interests (complete with interesting points) in an hour and a half. Frankly, I'd happily go on it again, and I might well pick up Richard's new book, which, if the tour is anything to go by, will be a mix of the intriguing, the unbelieveable and the amusing- with citations available on request.

Oh, and if you want to know the answer to the questions in the first paragraph- you'd better get in touch with Richard via Twitter (@RichardOSmith) or via his website. Apparently he's planning a new round of walks- by invitation only- in the autumn, so I'd get in on the ground floor!

Really great!
I had such a good time on this tour, every street and building has an anecdote.

The “Eccentric Oxford” walking tour with Richard is quite a good experience. The first great thing about this tour is that most of the time the group will be on the small side. This seems to be because this tour gets mostly local folks or those who have looked for tours on Daily Info.

Richard himself has quirky mannerisms and humour, which makes the whole thing fun and more memorable. He does these tours in his spare time and he is very knowledgeable and more than willing to shape the tour around your particular interests (if the group is small enough). On the particular day I went we had 3 people and he shaped the tour around our work and personal interests in Oxford. With me being new to Oxford (and the UK) he added some extra basic info as needed. His tour consisted of the brief history of the places we saw, with some very interesting tidbits that most may never bring up (do you know the 3 tell-tale signs that enable you to spot a prostitute?!).

The tour does not go a great distance around Oxford, so there is no need to fear that you can’t handle the walk, the pace, or the amount of time for the tour. In fact our tour, though it was supposed to be 100 minutes, was closer to 120 minutes and none of us realized it as Richard had kept us that fascinated. It is recommended you email him before hand if you prefer a smaller group...or you can do as I did and just show up.

Richard's tours are far more memorable than the other larger ones on offer in the city - and only £5!
