Nestled among their surprisingly large and stunning permanent collection, Christ Church Picture Gallery’s exhibition on Henry Aldrich, former Dean of Christ Church (1689-1710) is an interesting and educative taste of culture and art in late 17th century Oxford.
Allowing you to get up-close to the wonderfully intricate details of this selection of Aldrich’s extensive collection of prints, the exhibition includes interesting snippets of Aldrich’s life and influences, as well as several of his own sketches.
Unfortunately it’s rather too wordy and academic for children; and I doubt it would go down well with younger visitors. However, to anyone interested by Aldrich and the influence he had on shaping the academic and physical life of Oxford, this is a definite must-see.
A rare opportunity to glimpse the world of 17th century Oxford through the eyes of ‘one of the most eminent men in England’.
