‘A Diamond in the Sky’ is a new novel, set in Oxford, by local author Margaret Pelling – a former senior civil servant. The characters in the novel face a variety of personal problems: Dora is trying to come to terms with the loss of a child; Tom has been fired from his teaching post for getting a pupil pregnant. Much of the novel consists of the dialogue, spoken or internal, of these and other characters. Although Margaret Pelling writes fluently and it’s an easy read, she may have been tempted to include just too much of what the characters say to each other; readers may find themselves skipping to the end to discover how, if at all, their problems get resolved. Published by Honno Modern Fiction, paperback, £8.99.
