A unique venue in Oxford. A quiet, generous audience, and a fascinating plethora of acts. General standard: pretty high to occasionaly exceptional.

If you live in Oxford, you have to go to Catweazle at least once. Who knows, you may get hooked and become part of the strong regular following (a friendly and accommodating bunch). Once best described as a hippie cabaret night (I've seen dancing with glass spheres, storytelling, performance poetry, a naked man, Baka singing from one of the band Baka Beyond & an African drum troupe), it's now more of a place for budding singer-songwriters to air their work before starting to gig formally, and for excellent local performers to promote their other gigs. The structure of the event (whereby performers get in free - book in by 8.30pm) keeps the turnover of acts between weeks high, so whilst you're just as likely to see something dire as something excellent on any given night, you're guaranteed not to be bored. An atmosphere of respectful quiet is promoted, so whilst you definitely can't lampoon what you don't like (beware if cheap beer makes you noisy - you will be told off), you often get one of the best possible experiences of the acts you do like. Some of the best treats are due to organiser & founder Matt's connections with promoting world music in Oxfordshire, as he is often able to persuade visiting world-class acts to drop in. If you've ever gone out looking for the heart of hippie Oxford, and you haven't found it, then you haven't found Catweazle.
