I think most people in Oxford are familiar with The Cellar. They've managed to hold on to their identity and precious independence whilst so many venues in Oxford go corporate through pressure from big chains and breweries. It's even happened all down the Cowley Road so hats off to the Cellar for keeping it real right in the heart of the city where the competition is fierce. I saw Friendly Fires play here years ago way before they became so big and The Foals and Young Knives always played here back in the day. The Cellar's music policy is head and shoulders above anywhere else, across all genres, the venue is simple, no nonsense and laid back, they welcome everyone and the staff are respectful to nights such as The Goth night. Their Comedy night is top notch and most importantly their beer is cheap! Keep up the good work! Ghosty, 18/11/09 The Cellar gets better and better (and busier and busier). Listings on the website, on the board outside and in Nightshift make it a little easier to know what's on now. Stand-out night has to be Rollercoaster vs. Chicks with Decks (usually on the last Saturday of the month but do check) when live bands earlier in the evening give way to DJs playing a fantastic selection of indie, punk and just generally cool music to dance like a loon to. Bar is reasonably priced for central Oxford, with a selection of cocktails, several lagers and bitters and every Glasto-goers favourite tipple, Brothers Pear Cider, an exclusive in Oxford, I think? The only downsides are the loos (not great, let's be honest) and the overpowering smell of bath bombs and soap emanating from Lush, directly upstairs! Becky, 23/10/06 Quickly establishing itself as one of the centres of musical life in Oxford, The Cellar offers a wide range of specialist nights with an emphasis on Hip Hop, Funk, DnB and Latin Jazz although all types of music are represented. Previously heavily DJ orientated the venue has been moving much more in a live direction and is flourishing with a tight new soundsystem. One for the musos. Stand Out Nights: Bossaphonik (usually every other Wed) - top quality live latin jazz and funk. Big Hair - local & new indie/rock bands followed by DJs. Sketchy (every other Fri) scratching, hip hop and funk. Usually live bands at the weekend. Keep an eye on the listings because they can be pretty fluid. Jack, 19/07/05
