Brand new South Indian restaurant. Authentic regional specialities include dosas (a crispy pancake made from fermented rice batter, like a sourdough), idly (little steamed patties) and thali (sharing/tasting platters with lots of small portions of different things, like tapas). Ordered home delivery several times and was extremely pleased every time. I tried other Indian restaurants in Cowley before, but am sticking with Trichy Dosa since! The food gets here hot and is simply delicious, delivery is fast and there's always something extra in the bag that doesn’t show up on the bill :) The first time a friend from South India came over and we decided to give it a go. We’ve been very pleased with the result: swift and friendly service, all packed up well (no leaking boxes etc.) and 2 complimentary dishes (a starter and a dessert) that came with our order - yeah! The food was super-delicious. My friend was bit sceptical when we placed the order, but admitted it was better than she’d expected it to be, given the fact she’s outside India and not cooking herself :) She went to take her family to the restaurant 2 weeks later! I ordered another time when I had more friends over. Again, easy ordering over the phone, fast delivery and tons of yummy food (I had the leftovers for lunch the next day). A member of staff who was taking the order over the phone helped me making my choice after I literally was overwhelmed by the huge menu. Everything that came hit the spot! The filled dosas were giant and make a separate dish although they are really cheap! We got complimentary sauces and papadam. In short, I’m a pleased costumer and happy to recommend Trichy Dosa! KH (Unverified), 07/05/12 Twice we have tried to get takeaway from here and twice we have failed! The first time we telephoned and ordered from the menu that had just been dropped through our letterbox, only to be told that the restaurant no longer offered any of the things we were ordering (Thalis, among other items). Next time we tried to place an order via 'JustEat.co.uk' and received an 'order rejected' message, with reason supplied being 'too far to travel' - we live LESS THAN 500 METRES from the restaurant! I have been so looking forward to trying Trichy Dosa on the basis of the great reviews below, but it really shouldn't be so difficult to order food from a restaurant and purported takeaway! hypertensive (Unverified), 04/04/12 A London friend was keen to try Trichy Dosa based on her experience of south Asian cooking so I went along with her, my wife, and our baby daughter. The service was exemplary (if anything, a little too keen) and the waiters made us feel more than welcome with a baby. The dosas - long filled pancakes - were served on plastic trays, as if in a canteen, but everything was delicious. We'll be happy to return. OMM (Unverified), 20/03/12 A very bad experience and spoilt a good afternoon and my money. I will advise caution for anyone visiting the restaurant at the current standards. Outside- Good. Inside – Ok Toilet- Ok Customer services – among the worst I have faced till now. Food serving – worst (you have to ask for serving spoons, no name tags against the dishes (a big problem for vegetarians) Food preparation – waiter was trying to justify, Mango Chutney for Idli, Do I need to write more? (Shambhar, spicy lantel, was eatable). Overall, a very bad experience. Eating south Indian food here may give a bad idea about south Indian food. AnupPandey (DI User), 28/02/12 If you're a curry-house adventurer too lazy to travel to London or Birmingham in your search for the truly authentic, you're finally in luck! Oxford has been gathering a handful of regional specialists in the form of Nepalese and South Indian cuisine for a while now, and Trichy Dosa is the newest example of the latter, conveniently based on Cowley Road - Oxford's mini Curry Mile. To get a good measure of the range of food on offer, we ordered a staff takeaway lunch consisting of a variety of small vegetarian and meat dishes. The menu is MASSIVE - it looks like you could have an entirely different meal every visit for a multitude of visits before you had to start repeating yourself. That's no small claim for a fast food joint. In terms of individual dishes: the intriguingly-named Rock Fort chicken (no cheese involved, but there is a nice picture of the famous fort in the Indian city of Trichy on the menu) was either fiercely or perfectly spiced, depending on individual tolerance levels. To be fair, several dishes were somewhat on the fiendish side, since the generous use of chilli peppers is very much the South Indian style. If you're not sure you'll be able to cope, get a sweet lassi (delicious yoghurt drink) on the side to cool your mouth down afterwards, eat fast before the heat gets to you and don't be tempted to drink UNTIL you've finished - as drinking earlier will only make it harder! Moving on from eating tips: veg samosa were small for the price (£2.50 for 2) but charmingly pot-bellied in appearance, and somehow more delicate and crispy than the average. Mini idly - steamed rice and lentil patties - were great for dipping into the range of tiny pots of exotic sauces and curries (as is the South Indian way). Mosala dosa stuffed with potatoes and onion was filling and again excellent with the sauces. Rava Keema Dosa - lamb-stuffed and crispy - went down well with the meaties, though in retrospect was perhaps a little heavy and kebab-reminscent. (Might be best to be very hungry for that one in future.) Chicken and lamb chettinadus (curries) were spicy and filling. And finally - and here's where the 'range of sauces and curries' alluded to earlier came from - there was the vegetable thali. Priced at a reasonable £8.50, this consisted of a myriad small pots of deliciously flavoured items, including rasam, an earthily sour and salty soup with tamarind, tomato, chili and veg and the MOST DELICIOUS CARROT HALWA I have ever eaten. I could eat an entire dishful of this sweet, sticky dessert - if you think it sounds weird, try it. You'll see! Other sauces/curries featuring flavours delightfully unfamiliar to me (how?!) and fiendish spice levels included sambar (pigeon peas, tamarind and veg broth); kootu (lentils & veg); poriyal (fairly dryly fried mustard seeds, veg, lentils and spices); more veg samosa and some poppadam. Writing this, I have now made myself hungry all over again. This quite enormous feast, of which some remained for the following day, cost a total of £36.95. 6 people were eating. BARGAIN. Amazingly, Trichy Dosa are open 7 days a week, from 12 noon to 11.30pm at night - INCLUDING bank holidays. Ouch for them - yum for us. I suspect this will serve them well, along with their claim to be family-friendly and buggy-accommodating. They also offer external catering services. Double yum for us. Daily Info Staff (DI Staff), 12/01/12 If you are looking for a good authentic South Indian restaurant in Oxford, I would recommend 'Trichy Dosa'. Excellent food (both veg & non-veg). dosa-lover (Unverified), 10/01/12 Not found a south Indian restaurant as good as this since eating in Tooting years ago. Brilliant food and incredibly good service. Will keep on eating here despite the stiff opposition from the other Cowley road Indians. Cathjohn (Unverified), 28/12/11 The service was excellent, the Masala Dosa transported me back to India it is now our new favourite restaurant. The veg curry so good, we didn't get to try the veg samosas as our son aet them as soon as they appeared so they must have been good. Excellent value for money. 28/12/11 Great restaurant for little money. The food is cooked fresh and on the premises. It was reassuring to see only Indian people eating in this restaurant (some even leaving with takeaway at the end of the meal). I am French, my partner is English and gluten free and we have 2 girls, we are not used to Indian food and asked the chef for a selection of starters, mains and desserts. For my children the Chicken Pakora, Jasmine Idly, Globe Jamun, Mango Kulfi & the Plain Lassi were a hit. For us the fermented crispy pancake (Dosa) was excellent - we should have eaten it with our fingers like the other guests (it was a bit hard to cut with a knife) - next time we will know. Great to discover a different kind of authentic cuisine from the south of India - we will certainly be back and recommend this place to friends. Napoleon (DI User), 24/12/11 Many thanks for your reviews. Just to avoid any misunderstanding our Vegetable Thali is £8.50 and it does include rice. Sorry if there has been any confusion with Royal Madras Thali and Trichurapali Thali. Please log in to www.trichydosa.com for full menu price. Both our price and the quality is not far off as in Trichy, India. We pride ourself to be a most affordable restaurant in Oxford. We are looking forward to welcome you all at The Trichy Dosa. TrichyDosa (DI User), 15/12/11 V.v.expensive for a veg. thali! £10.00 and that's without rice! - wow. Dosas are to be expected at the £3-£4.50 mark but the thalis are way overpriced for what they are actually are. Beer is a little steep. Decor/atmos is ok generally and fairly authentice south Indian. anony mouse (Unverified), 11/12/11 I am one very happy lady - a long awaited dosa place has finally arrived in Oxford. On 10/12/2011 we went to Trichy Dosa in Cowley road. Restaurant was very very busy I would recemmend you to make a booking before you go. We had Masala Dosa, It was fantastic we can't await to go back again. Staff were very friendly and helpful and food was very good value for money. This place is simply the best... Thank you for bringing Dosa to Oxford Dosa Craze (Unverified), 11/12/11 A warm welcome to Oxford and thank you very much for your excellent service and hospitality during my 1st visit on 3 Dec 11.
