The atmosphere is pretty good but the service is slow. The food is not too bad; my favourite being the jacket with cheddar and pickle. Probably best to give the salads a wide birth, but look to the desserts to top the tank. All good.
JK, 07/03/10 Peaceful, friendly, unique environment. I hope the Nosebag will be there for a long time, because I do not know where I would go to as a 'last resort', since all the places in Oxford seem to blend into one long tiresome and boring experience. Nosebag is refreshing and the first time I walked in I felt at home and I can't say that of many places. 06/12/09 Monday lunchtime visit: goulash with one salad, beef lasagne with 3 salads and garlic bread. Lemon drizzle cake, two drinks. £20. Everything seemed fresh and tasty and generous. I think it's obvious that with prepared food waiting for you cafeteria style, some salads will get elderly by the end of the day. This is a trade-off against the fact that you have to wait 2 minutes at most for your food. If you navigate with common sense, it's a pleasant and reliable place. Nice tables, nice view, jugs of water. Marvin, 07/05/09 Yesterday evening me and a friend decided to go for an early supper at The Nosebag. Whilst the restaurant itself has maintained all of the charm that it has had since the first time I visited in the 70's the quality of the food seems to have deteriorated considerably! My friend opted for a selection of salads from the counter, which all looked quite appetising but in fact tasted quite stale. I chose an Artichoke, Lemon, Thyme & Chicken Risotto at £8.95. The risotto was overcooked and stodgy, and lukewarm. The artichokes were cold - it looked like they had just been thrown in at the last minute, straight from the fridge. There were 2 pieces of greasy chicken dumped on top, and a chunk of what was supposed to be garlic bread (a thick slice of bread covered on both sides with a garlicky spread. It was impossible to tell whether the slightly rancid tasting spread was actually butter). Again the bread tasted stale and it was very greasy. There was plenty on the plate but for £8.95 I expect better quality. We will not be in a hurry to eat there again. Ali, 23/01/09 I'm a big fan of the Nosebag and have been going there for years. I like the food. The portions and prices are just right. The choices are good, especially for a vegetarian like myself and the salads and desserts are very appetizing. I also enjoy their afternoon cream teas. My five year daughter likes it as well. The atmosphere is very pleasant and it is a great place to stop by, after a busy morning or afternoon in the city centre. I now live overseas but everytime I come back to Oxford, I always make a visit to the Nosebag. Jas, 24/08/08 The best food, the best prices, the best selection, and the best portion size in all of Oxford. The Nosebag is my absolute favorite restaurant here (and I am a very picky eater)! I unfortunately have to return to the States in two weeks time and I wish I could pack the Nosebag along with me. The salads are amazing, the spinach/mushroom lasagna scrumptious, and the pear crumble cake and the white chocolate strawberry cheesecake are to die for. All my friends love it as well. Dutch Girl, 05/06/08 I've eaten at The Nosebag on and off for years, that ended today. I've always enjoyed their selection of fresh salads, today I ordered a baked potato with a side of their curried pasta salad. The pasta tasted a little odd and after a couple of mouthfuls, I gave it an inspection and found mould filling the inside of the penne. When I took it up to show the staff, the woman nonchalantly gave me a fiver from the till and said 'It's been a slow weekend, I'll throw the rest away'. I'd assumed their salads were made fresh daily, but apparently that really isn't the case. Didn't think much to their response, either. j, 06/08/07 I've only recently become a regular at the Nosebag, but it definitely has a certain charm. The efficient "self-service" reminds you a bit of a school canteen, but the cosy atmosphere and homely seating makes up for it. The portions are massive, you will definitely be full after a main course, though the large selection of cakes look pretty good. You feel pretty 'healthy' eating the food as it's got a certain homemade fresh feel to it. And pricing is reasonable too. Perfect when you want to grab a quick bite to eat, or a lovely place to meet with friends too. Oxford Student, 01/04/07 The queue at this upstairs self-service restaurant with views over the Oxford Union and Michael Street can sometimes reach halfway down the stairs. Service is therefore slow - but the wait is worth it. Portion sizes here are immense, making the meals very good value, and the vast array of salads was excellent. I had the vegetable lasagne, with a choice of three of the aforementioned salads and garlic bread. At £6.75, this is probably the best value meal, and left me feeling so full that it was difficult to move afterwards. The lasagne was tasty, homemade to the standard of my Mum's and served with plenty of vegetables, and the garlic bread substantial and filling. The salads added colour and variety; I had the crunchy red cabbage and apple (a combination new to me), curried pasta with peanuts, and complemented a mixture of onions, tomatoes, cucumber and olives. My dining partner chose a jacket potato with cottage cheese - again this was sizeable with plenty of filling. For £4.75 this comes with a helping of salad (he chose white cabbage with mushrooms and dill) and a choice of topping (mango chutney, onion, pickle or pineapple). The restaurant has a licence (and serves a wide variety of interesting-looking fruit wines), but we chose cool glasses of juice to accompany the meal which complemented our selections of salad. For a little more money we could have chosen from a variety of hot dishes, some served with salad, others with vegetables, such as risotto, penne pasta or armenian lamb. For a little less, salad can come on its own, or with bread, and there is always homemade soup. I was full, but my friend had room for pudding; there is an impressive selection of cakes (I'd like to come here at tea-time!), and after being tempted by the homemade cheesecake, he chose the chocolate fudge cake which was as rich and chocolatey as any chocoholic could hope for. This restaurant is especially good for vegetarians and represents very good value for money. Highly recommended. 04/12/03
