Traditional caff grub is the order of the day here - don't for heaven's sake confuse it with Brown's of St Giles! Your classic plate along the lines of egg, chips, beans, sausage, bacon etc. is going to set you back less than a fiver, thus weighing in just under (for example) St Giles Cafe prices (whilst undeniably not providing the same enormous quantities). Deli-style cakes of the unidentifiable chocolate slab, iced bun and flapjack variety are also available, all of which are perfectly palatable if you like that kind of thing. If you're on a budget, don't need to watch your waistline and don't mind the pack-'em-in seating arrangement, fishbowlesque windows-for-walls and tacky pvc tablecloths, you'll get a good value, convenient feed here.

The people who work here are friendly and accommodating and worked with me as I indecisively got a sandwich. 5 minutes later I was equipped with my sandwich and out the door. Unfortunately the people behind me were immature school boys talking about their imagined sex lives in the most vulgar terms possible. The rest of the people were a nice eclectic mix with some very authentic looking locals for good measure, so I assume that that is not a normal characteristic of this simple and sweet place, where you can eat very traditional stout home cooking.

I came to Oxford, from the US, about two weeks ago. Seeing as how the first meal that came to mind was fish and chips, i decided to try it here. This happened to be a pleasant surprise-- compared to two unsatisfactory encounter with Carfax Fish and Chips (they charge 10 pence per packet of tartar sauce and mayonnaise) as well as the Turf Tavern's fish and chips. The food is affordably priced and the environment is one that keeps me coming back.

The above review doesn't do this oxford instituion justice. Firstly, the menu is totally Cafe grub - but they are masters of what they do and there is no grease on the plate. The portions are large, but not overwhelming. The chips are properly proportioned, and well cooked, and they do not use thin-fries. For a traditional cafe the menu is fairly varied, and if you want to eat healthily you can have cornflakes or poached egg on toast etc. Anything they do is well executed - I'm saying this as someone who really appreciates it. The decor is normal, the serving staff are always friendly - the sons of the portugese couple that own and run it. The clientele are hugely varied, from Asbo offenders and their social workers to Oxford academics. Returning to the food, it really is a good cafe - the food is great.
