Service was ok but the food is terrible if you order anything which is not standard classic pub food - so burger or steak - which I didn't order. But still think you can get much better burgers and steak anywhere else in Oxford. I had vegetable risotto but it was nothing like a risotto I have ever eaten - it was basically a pile of rice with a pile of the risotto vegetables and stock next to the rice! k_bee (DI User), 12/03/12 Time Warp restaurant and I do not mean this in a positive way... Sadly my prejudices about eating at The Mitre after a couple of disastrous visits many years ago were reinforced this week. My Husband and I were dragged against our will to this central Oxford Beefeater eating place by much older relatives ( one wanting to re-live his College days) and it was about as awful as it can get. One of the oldest Inns in Oxford this should by right be one of the most appealing and most attractive place in the city, but it feels grotty, unloved and really quite dingy with an air of having been abandoned circa 1974... The ambience and decor complimenting beautifully what could only be termed "school dinner". At best. Scrap that my - School Dinners were actually pretty darn good. Hubby and I shared a King Prawn Trio, where unappetising and tasteless prawns shared a plate with a couple of forlorn looking leaves and a sweet chili sauce seemingly out of a jar. This was followed by possibly the worst chicken Ceasar salad I have ever had! A dried up piece of chewy chicken breast , A Ceasar sauce once again tasting like something out of a jar, sickly and thick and "Parmesan" tasting suspiciously like cheap Cheddar slivers. Sweet and horrible. I cannot believe anyone in those days of locally sourced foods and fresh foods could still find this kind of swill acceptable to the palate. I am quite sure this place would have never survived had it not been located so superbly on one of Britain's most beautiful and most touristic streets. Everything about it looks and tastes generic and reeks of an era which taste and flavour forgot. Quite frankly the worst meal I have had in a long time. The service was pleasant, efficient and friendly to be fair. Pamplemousse (Unverified), 09/03/12 I had a steak at The Mitre and enjoyed everything. The steak was cooked well, my waitress was friendly and I didn't wait long to eat. Recommended. Jimmy (Unverified), 08/07/10 I ate at "The Mitre", had a sunday roast and it was fabulous! blaze (Unverified), 16/05/10 Had a late night dinner at the Mitre 3 weeks ago and it was staggeringly slow service. This was compounded by it being relatively quiet and although my main meal of rack of ribs was quite good I'd say the food & service here used to be much better. B Cooper (Unverified), 15/04/08 I've never drunk in the Mitre bar but can urge anyone who somehow stumbles across the back-street linked venue The Turl bar, to avoid it like the plague. This bar is run by the Mitre (why do they persist?) and is accesible from Turl Street. Very grotty run-down feel with nothing to commend it. Stick to the front Mitre bar for your alcohol needs with its plush surrounds.
