The Purple Turtle

Drinking Establishment & Gig Venue

Part of the old Oxford Union cellars. The music is filtered throughout the series of caverns by the jukebox. There is a dance floor, table football and the walls can get sweaty.
Opening hours: Mon-Sat 5.30pm-3am, Sun 7pm-2am.

Cant beat £1 a pint everyday! If you go in before 9pm you can get in with any student card on Oxford Union nights anyway. I say just get down early or go on the other nights!

I agree that it is hard to figure out the rules for when and who can get in, but it was definitely one of my favorite places to go when I was in Oxford. Especially for the happy hour! I would recommend it.

This place confuses me greatly. According to one bouncer non-union members are not allowed in thursday - saturday but some bouncers will let you in regardless. Haven't been recently as they have really cracked down on the whole oxford student thing, which is a shame because I really enjoyed going there!

Good music most of the time, reasonable drinks, but the dancefloor can get so unbearably hot!!! I would go back, if they would let me, but it seems like I'll have to wait till Easter when the Oxford students have gone and they suddenly really want my custom.

The Purple Turtle has to be one of the best drinking establishments in Oxford without a doubt! I have been drinking in there for a while now and find the atmosphere to be undoubtedly the best in Oxford. It has so much character. Occasionally it can be full of upper class Oxford students letting their hair down but generally most people are down to earth. The bar staff and doorstaff are always friendly and there are hardly ever fights. Drinks are cheaper than most places and probably better quality as well (makes me think how everyone else gets away with charging us so much). They have a jukebox with an amazing variety of music and DJ's on most nights that are pretty good. The live music on Sundays are really good aswell. All round quality service!

The Staff, the doormen and the cheap prices make this place a treasure to all students in Oxford. The oldest standing student bar in Oxford. It's underground beneath the Oxford Union building. Okay, so it's a bit grotty to some people, but the friendly chilled out attitudes in everyone is so hard to find anywhere else. I love it!
