Like the others here, I have sampled the delights of Simon's Fish and Chips and must say the chips are hugely tasty. However, I also agree that whilst in Simon's F&C it is essential not to take your eyes off the host - firstly for entertainment value and secondly because the chips are undoubtedly much tastier without the salt. Enjoy.
mary t (DI User), 08/10/11 It's the only fish and chip shop to go to in Oxford! R V (Unverified), 15/06/10 We don't have a good local chippy and, desperate for some good fish and chips, searched these pages for a recommendation. We don't live near Cowley, so going to Simon's was a bit of a trek. However, the service was quick and friendly, and we were very careful to avoid the salt and vinegar, as advised by the reviews here. On reaching home, we found the chips were very good. The fish also looked good and for the first few bites of batter, it tasted ok too. But then all three of us laid down our cutlery as the fish in the batter was so salty it was totally inedible. Not joking, here, my partner usually likes salty foods but he was grimacing in disgust. One person, offered a taste, had to spit it out. We concluded that the fresh fish must have been stored in extremely strong brine, and then had been fried without any rinsing. I honestly can't describe here how salty it was. Too far for us to go back to complain - and in any case, we weren't impressed that so simple an error could have been made. IgorStrav (DI User), 17/05/08 I agree that these are the BEST chips in Oxford and I've lived here for 38 years (my age BUT I've been going to this chippy on and off for about 25 years!!!). And you can say "no thanks" when she asks about the salt and vinegar - they're still quite delicious - just be QUICK before she gets going! Naz (DI User), 30/11/07 Simon fish and chips is legendary! To someone like me whose local chip shop at home serves some of the worst chips and most forgettable fish just because there is no competition, Simon's is a godsend. The chips are really very good - I'm not sure what the secret is; it could be the oil they are cooked in, the temperature of it, or maybe how they are fried but they are definitely better than the average chip. This general tastiness seems to extend to the batter on the fish as well. One thing to be careful of though is the potentially heart-attack inducing amounts of salt that the charming hostess (is she on drugs? as surely people can't be this happy all the time) seems wont to pour over your order. Otherwise, very tasty and worth a bite if you're passing on a cold winter's night.
