Denis is a lively chap, out early until late and doing a terrific trade. Presumably he gets plenty of foot traffic coming from the railway station next door, but even at 9pm he was busy.

The chicken kebab is lovely; marinated as it should be and made with bite sized chunks. The provision of a fork means that you can avoid the bouncy pitta bread altogether should you so wish (and unless you’ve got some Rennie to hand it is advisable). The kebab meat wasn’t up to the standard of the chicken, but it was palatable. The portions are large, and the range of sizes/prices is ditto.

The salad consists of some onions, cabbage, lettuce and tomato (no cucumber!), and isn’t anything to write home about. Likewise the sauces. The aioli tasted of salad cream - no hint of garlic. The chilli had a distinct ketchuppy flavour.

If you ask nicely, he will cook an egg to go on top - to your liking. However, don’t bother with the cheese; a thin strip of rubber buried under the meat and fusing to the pitta isn’t worth 20p.

As a student I am prone to a trip to the local kebab van every so often and believe myself to be quite the conscious. I am a vegetarian, so obviously my opinion on ACTUAL kebabs is quite invalid, but I would love to express my views on Denis's Veggie Burgers and chips.

Although I live on the far end of Cowley Road (past 6 Kebab Houses on a journey home from a night at the Students Union) I am extremely willing to pro-long my arrival home in chance of a Denis'. I have even been know to trek from all corners of the Earth (City Arms on Cowley Road) on the long, lonely journey to Denis's, alone, on a Tuesday night at 3.30am, purely to indulge in the beautiful, sensual experience that is Denis's. The Veggi Burger is full of taste that stimulates the taste buds in a fit of exhilarating passion with a choice of mouth-watering sauces that will leave your tongue begging for more. The salad on the burger is optional, I personally revel in the crisp, fresh, lettuce, with juicy ripe tomatoes and onions, cooked to perfection so they almost melt in your mouth.

The chips aren't half bad either.
