The Duke of York is the kind of place you always pass in the car and think what a god-awful place it looks, being marooned as it is in a void between the multi-storey car park and the ice rink, and if you ever took the time to pull up and go in you'd quickly realise it's just as bad on the inside! I should have known better than to visit this pub again after my only previous visit some 5 years earlier was less than memorable (even though I was too drunk to care) other than for one of my friends tumbling down the step outside the door! So with intrepidation, myself and a friend chanced our arms and went for it again on a soaking saturday night and found to our interest that they were in the early stages of a school-disco 80's party. It cost £1 to enter (there seemed no point in arguing about this), but once inside I quickly realised that the theme only meant that the bar staff were badly dressed in school uniform and there was a vacant dance-floor churning out crap 80's pop. The clientele fall into 2 categories - under 21 chavvy lager louts playing pool in the left-hand bar and in the right-hand bar (or dance-floor when we visited), a motley crew of drunk middle aged men, and women who are still partying like they did 25 years ago wearing the same clothes. ALso beware the gents toilets - no urinals and carpeted! Overall - avoid - there is so, so much better elsewhere Joe B, 28/05/07
