Just off the A34 on a quiet road that goes nowhere, in the village of South Hinksey, on a tip-off I found to my delight The General Elliot, CAMRA pub of the year with a lovely selection of great ales on offer (plus beers and wines for all tastes) and a jolly good selection of reasonably priced meals. I went back with my wife for a meal and have been a regular now for several months. The GE is definitely not a gastro pub, but a rather old-fashioned community pub with a menu of good quality traditional dishes. There is a blackboard listing the daily fare including a choice of vegetarian meals. Regulars are ham, egg and chips; a three-cheese ploughman’s with brie, stilton and cheddar; and generous steaks cooked as you like. However I am told that almost anything is possible with a bit of notice. Seems like a nice idea! Starters and desserts include old favourites such as prawn cocktails and sticky toffee pudding. I am told there are over 30 different soft drinks to choose from if you are driving, but the pub is only a 20 minute walk from Oxford city centre on lovely country paths, so why drive?
