This shop is no longer open. I phoned today & was told that as they have so much outside catering that the shop is no longer viable. I suggested a notice in the window might be a good idea! mcredd, 17/06/08 I read the rave reviews posted here and decided to give the Global Deli a try. On my first attempt, a Tuesday, the folk inside told me that they were closed, no explanation given. I went back the next day and their ingredients had not been delivered, so I was offered a sandwich with a choice of the few items that were in stock, carrot salad, or hummus (more or less). Oh, or "curry or [something muttered quickly and indiscernibly]". Further, I was unimpressed by the description or display of what they had to offer. For example, there may have been curry and some other hot meal for purchase, but I had no idea what was in it, what it looked like, or what did or did not come with it. Neither did I feel encouraged to ask. There were no smiles, it was not explained why or whether things were not in normal working order, and I was definitely not enticed to try again another day. In fact, I simply wanted to leave. I am willing to accept that it may have been an off week for the Global Deli but the reception I received was far from welcoming. Their menu, on the other hand, looks lovely, and it may well be that ordering their food by phone is the way to go (the online menu certainly gives you far more description of what's on offer than you will find in the store). I love the idea of a local, organic deli and I truly hope my experience was an exception, but I do not think I will be returning. 02/04/08 Landline working again now! Hurray! And they do DELIVERY LUNCHES now too - ours even came to our office early, and was DELICIOUS - phone by 10am and ask what the menu specials are for the day. Creole fish with rice and avocado was amazing, and a full meal for only £4.95... and tiny herby salad in a pot, mmm. (No bland water-flavoured lettuce here.) And the chorizo and manchego cheese in ciabatta was a flavour fiesta for the face! My colleague described her gluten-free salad box (with beans, houmous, rice & veg) as 'delicate and moreish'. All this and they have milk in returnable glass bottles too...(but you have to go there to get those!) Roo, 04/03/08 I started working at this end of town last September, and went to the Global Deli because it was the closest place to me. What serendipity - now it's like visiting family - Pip and her staff are just gorgeous. The food is amazing - from the sandwiches to the salads to the brownies to the new addition of lamb/chicken curry - some of the best I've had, and I'm of South Asian extraction! Her idea of curry and avocado - wow. Everything she uses is fairtrade or locally sourced and reasonably priced. Take the time out to slip down the Iffley Rd and have a sandwich (or curry!) and coffee at the Global Deli - one of Oxford's hidden little gems. Irim, 28/02/08 Lovely lovely food. The brownies here are the best I've eaten in the UK. A little off the beaten track but worth a visit and a look. Cari, 29/06/07 This lunchtime I was sat in the sunshine outside the front of the Global Deli enjoying one of their 'sandwich boxes' and thinking... this food is so delicious, so imaginative, such good value and I'm going to have to come here on a regular basis! I would highly recommend a visit. marion, 01/05/07 Fabulous take-away cakes! Especially fig tart by the slice. joanna, 11/02/07 The Global Deli is a very lovely shop. Genuinely ethical products at reasonable prices, including things for baby, freshly made cakes and bulk baking ingredients. Their home cooked food and salads are excellent. I look forward to them developing into a café. They also sell local organic veg and fantastic local eggs, and some crafts (leather bags, some pottery, etc.). Worth a visit. Anna Non, 09/02/07
