Thank you to The Plough for making my gran's 99th birthday one to remember! There were 18 of us for a lunchtime meal and they laid the Library out specially for us. There was something on the menu for everybody's taste, from fish and chips through to ostrich!! Despite it being a miserable day the pub was packed to bursting so although the food took a while longer than usual it was all very good quality and freshly cooked. I would recommend this pub highly. We'll be back!

This is a great, traditional British Pub with character and a constantly changing "specials" food board, in addition to their standard menu! Meals and snacks are good value. The beers are well kept and there is a choice of honestly priced wines with a range by the glass (though none expensive or especially distinguished).

They have a reasonable, covered facility outside for smokers, with heating when required, plus more tables to enjoy the sun on an agreeable walled outside patio. Inside, the "library" area is particularly charming, there is a large dining room and roomy bar area.

The staff are generally pleasant and courteous, in my experience. The clientèle is wonderfully diverse and interesting; it may include the occasional well known author, quite distinguished academics, walkers, local societies, senior professional and retired people, as well as local tradesmen. It is a thoroughly friendly atmosphere. Sometimes it is fairly quiet, on other occasions busy! I hesitate to recommend this pub, since it is one of my local favourites and I still want a seat!

Have just found this great pub, and what a find. It is unusual to find a pub in Oxford that has not only good food, nice staff, but is good value for money. We have been a few times to eat in the bar with our kids who are made welcome, and have been in the restaurant on our own which was also very nice. A great place to sit out the front in the summer, and the girls who work there make you feel very welcome. Keep it up and we will be back again & again.

I think they must have caught the bar man on a bad day as I have been coming to this pub for years and I have never been "grumped at"! The staff are always friendly and treat you as if you are a regular even if it is your first visit. The food is superb, the chips have to be some of the best I have ever tasted and the specials list is always mouth watering.
I'd say keep up the good work,
It will always be on my "favourites" list!

Yes it is still a bit quiet early evening , mid week. But come Sunday lunch time , in summer especially and you will be pushed to find anywhere to sit. The Bar man is not grumpy - only a bit shy. If you talk reasonably to him he will be helpful. This is the best real pub left in north Oxford, (counting Upper Wolvercote as north Oxfordish) since both Cutteslowe ones, and the Kings Arms Summertown went. I am sorry it has made it onto this website now as it is quite popular enough with its regulars already.

Stumbled across this pub on a sunny weekday a few weeks ago and found it to be a bit of a gem. Nice patio frontage looking out onto Port Meadow with tables leads round to front door that opens into a large but inviting wooden bar area. Lots of leather chairs and sofas scattered about and decent choice of drinks at bar. Wasn't eating but noticed the swanky-looking restaurant tacked on the side (I've heard the food is pretty good as well). Look out for The Library Bar at the rear with its grand book cases and big tables. Really good pub after first impressions.

On negative side though, bar man seemed a bit grumpy. I visited again in the evening with some other friends a week later or so thinking it would be thriving with the local community but found it to be near-empty and lacking any spark. Bit of a shame. Oh, and the barman was still grumpy!
