Just been for a meal and really enjoyed the food, drink and company. Cannot understand the other write ups as the staff were both pleasant and helpful!! Will certainly go again!! Sandy B
SandyB (Unverified), 15/11/08 To say that the choice and range of food was old fashioned here would be an insult to the 1970s. Our child's meal at £4.75 was 8 oven chips and two 2 one-inch squares of over-cooked pizza. Everything from the meat to the horseradish sauce was bland - apart from the gravy which tasted of liver or some kind of offal. Toilets were shameful and the place looks really run down. The staff weren't rude to us but they weren't nice either. We'll take our £45 elsewhere next time! steph (Unverified), 06/07/08 If you like to eat Sunday lunch in a hot steamy atmosphere and pile food of mediocre quality (greasy potatoes, woeful meat poorly cooked) high on your plate - as many diners at this establishment appear to - then The Windmill, just off the A40 near Burford, might just be worth a try. The brusqueness of some of the waiting staff doesn’t normally cross the boundary of acceptability, but you might want to draw the line at your daughter-in-law being asked “if you’re a vegetarian, why do you come to a f***ing carvery?” (This after checking during a telephone booking that vegetarian options are available and being told: “No problem!”.) On balance, if I want to have good food and hear people being subjected to insulting language I’ll stay at home, order a take-away and watch a video of Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen. Alternatively, if I’m happy to do without the foul language, I could visit any one of a large number of restaurants and hotels in the Witney and Burford area where the ambience is pleasant, the staff efficient and the management welcoming. Perhaps if it changes hands or the present proprietor becomes less tired and emotional, The Windmill might also pass those tests at some point in the future. The Windmill does have its good points, though, even in its present state; the car park is conveniently laid out for easy departure. Porphyro (Unverified), 05/12/07 The worst pub lunch I have ever had. The Hooky bitter was stale, the stilton salad was £6.95 for the cheese, some old iceberg and a tomato; it differed only from the cheddar baguette in that it had no bread and was £1 more expensive. Avoid. PaulW (Unverified), 28/07/07 Please fill in the boxes and then click "Send Review" to submit your review for Windmill Carvery. | |
