love it! very good cambodian and thai dishes. good value especially the set menus Lucy, 21/08/08 After phoning around various Chinese takeaways which didn't seem to want to take our call / didn't deliver to Abingdon Rd, my boyfriend and I tried AK for the first time last night and loved it - food was delivered in about half an hour and was delicious (especially loved the super crunchy spring rolls!) I'm glad the others didn't answer and we'll definitely be going there again! Sandy, 16/07/08 My Girlfriend and I order quite regularly from AK City (probably too regularly!). Always good and fairly priced. The Thai curries are great and my other half recommends the pork ribs in BBQ sauce. I also recommend the Fish 'n Chips which aren't too shabby either. Delivery is typically 40 minutes and the driver is always polite and efficient. Dacarlo, 03/03/08 Amazing! Best Chinese in Oxford! Busta Bud, 23/02/08 AK City is an absolute find. What looks like a slightly dodgy fish and chippy serves what I think is the best Thai food in Oxford (yes, including Chang Mai). The Red and Green curries are so good with lots of Thai vegetables in. The soups are lovely as well and are not clogged with MSG (so no headaches or weird dreams), the specials are excellent and the fish and chips are really good. They also deliver and are very reasonably priced. Try the £5 RICE BOXES which include a spring roll and a drink. The people who own it are really friendly but it is still the food that sets it apart from the competition. tommy boy, 10/01/08 great food, great price. I strongly recommend this place, and agree with all the reviews below. Amit, 04/12/07 I've only just discovered AK City, and it's a real gem! You'll know it as the place with a mural, on the corner of Cowley Rd and Stockmore St. It looks like a scruffy chippy which does some chinese dishes on the side, until you look at the menu which contains some more exciting offerings than the usual chinese fare - Cambodian curries, Thai and other oriental dishes. It's quick, and friendly and cheap. For this price you might expect MSG-soaked sauces but instead it's real cookery! Fresh and fragrant with real herbs in! Highly recommended are the rice boxes (rice, main dish, spring roll, drink - £5). The peanut and chilli sauce is lovely and the Thai green curry is very delicate. In fact my mouth is watering just remembering it! This might not be Shanghai 30's but it's not far off, and at this price arguably better value! Hungry Jen, 17/04/07 Wonderful food nice people and it's all about their rice box deal for a fiver! Can't beat that value for money. Best take away I've had by far. mr cambodia, 21/03/07 Two starving humans. Chilli and garlic chips (large). Peanut chilli tofu thing, plain rice, bottle of water. Swift friendly service, two full people, EIGHT QUID. This place continues to amaze. Bunny and beast., 27/02/07 Yes, this place is great. We tend to eat in, simply because we get to eat sooner that way. Especially recommended are nos 2 and 2A (veggie starters), and 118 (I think), a chilli peanut tofu thingy. We've had a fine and filling meal for two for as little as £13, including a cup of tea. And they're very friendly. TSB & GBH, 28/09/06 This place sells what are probably the best chips in Oxford. Loukas, 05/03/06 Excellent. The best food and a lovely family-run takeaway, at affordable prices. Really recommend both the Cambodian food and the fish and chips. I don't live in Oxford anymore, but still drive back here to get my take-aways. Ali, 30/01/06 This is an amazingly good little takeaway, just opposite the Ultimate Picture Palace and the Globe bar. Formerly known as Wings, this is a real gem, combining an excellent selection of Cambodian, Thai and Chinese food, all at affordable prices, with what are easily the best chips, fish, battered stuff and pies in East Oxford, and arguably one of the best in the city. Family-run, open when you need it, reliable delivery service, and handy at closing time. Cambodian food is, to my taste, somewhere between Thai and Chinese, and A K City set a very high standard for other takeaways to aim for. Dave, 29/11/05 What was once a vaguely illicit hole in the wall on the corner of Cowley and Stockmore Street has become a friendly place to pick up a cheap and tasty meal. The recently renovated AK City features a new and extensive Cambodian, Thai and Chinese menu, with British and American favourites thrown in for kicks. Walking up Cowley, you'll recognize it by the colourful mural of the Angkor Wat temple in Cambodia that adorns the outer wall. When we popped in, the lady at the counter was friendly and took our order right away. Although pleased by the cleanliness and bright lighting, we decided to takeaway. The tiny store only has counter seats for five, and one table for three that is right in the front window, so it doesn't offer much in the way of privacy or space. I ordered an appetizer of three Chicken Pancake Rolls with a fresh basil and cucumber dip. At £1.95, it was a great value. The rolls were large – about four inches long and a good inch thick – and flavourful. The "pancake" batter was thick, chewy without being rubbery, and only slightly oily. The rolls were filled with a tasty mix of carrots and cabbage, and were reminiscent of chicken (although actual chicken pieces were strangely absent). I loved the dip. A very light oil with fresh chopped basil, peanuts, and cucumbers thrown in was the perfect mild complement to the somewhat spicy rolls. For just two pounds, I was actually pretty full. My friend ordered the Pad Thai for £4.50. It was delicious, far beyond what one would expect for that price. The noodles were soft and appropriately slippery, and well balanced with chicken, shrimp, vegetables, hot peppers, and a top layer of fried egg. It was neatly served in a plastic dish about 5 by 7 inches, so the quantity of food was adequate but not overwhelming. If you're really hungry, I'd recommend adding on an appetizer. You'd certainly have a lot to choose from: you could live in Oxford for years without exhausting AK City's menu. They have everything: Cambodian curries, spare ribs, veggie-tofu stir-fry, and all kinds of meat and seafood in your choice of black bean, lemon, oyster, coconut, pepper, soya, chilli, basil, or crushed peanut sauce... it boggles the mind. And 213 of the 223 items on the menu cost less than £5! For stalwart British palates, the old fish & chips, burgers and baguettes from AK City's past life are still available. Do note that the baguettes are only available during lunchtime from 11:45am to 2pm. AK City does dinner from 5pm to midnight, and is closed on Sundays. I've never seen it crowded, and we got our order in less than ten minutes, so go anytime. If you've only got a few minutes or a few pounds, but still want to eat all kinds of very good food, definitely stop by AK City. Lindsay Oishi, 15/08/04
