I've have just spent the last couple of hours at the Six Bells with two of my children.
We ordered dinner and some drinks and played some word games as we waited. I must say, I was greeted by a very friendly bar lady and got some good deals on the food.

Food came out nice and hot. By this time the staff changed over and we had a lovely young lady serving us who was nice to the kids.

As the pub wasn't too busy we played a few more games and had another drink. It was so nice to be out in a social environment but not in a noisy unsettled place.

I can't wait to go back, it's hard to find family-friendly pubs lately so thumbs up to the Six Bells.

Popped in for a quick lunch at The Six Bells after visiting CS Lewis' grave with our 9-month-old and husband's visiting mum. Initial impression was that we felt as though we had intruded upon the local's territory, which is sad because even though we're "not from around here", we have made Oxford our home and actually live just down the street. Unfortunately two of our meals didn't get printed out in the kitchen, so as baby ate and I politely waited for the other two meals to arrive to start digging in, it became apparent that they just weren't coming at all... To the credit of the staff, once we went and inquired about the missing meals, they were very apologetic and offered hubs and his mum a free drink while they waited.

So, the plus sides are, the staff seemed nice and the food was great, my chicken burger was tender and delicious and baby's nuggets were real chicken, not that bubblegum chicken rubbish. Hubs said his burger was fantastic. The jukebox was playing Ska music, which we loved, and we had a nice meal together laughing and chatting.

Shame about the environment. One of the patrons even muttered under his breath that my husband shouldn't be taking the baby for a nappy change because "that's woman's work". I'm not one to blame an establishment for it's customers, but given the hostile reaction from a few of what appeared to be regulars, we won't be back.

The Six Bells is rather a pleasant surprise. Situated just off the main road near Barton and now a Greene King ‘Meet & Eat' brand pub - despite the location it is shielded enough from the road that one can forget it is there!

On our last visit the real Ale choice was limited – just IPA (at a mere £2.45 a pint) and Abbott's Ale. I like Abbott's but was disappointed that two taps were out-of-use.

Food is served all day (from 12pm until 9pm) and the selection is family friendly; simple but interesting.

We opted for ‘Ultimate Surf, Turf and Cluck Burger' which was 100% British beef burger; southern-fried chicken; bacon and cheese with chipotle sauce, mayo and salad in a lightly toasted white bun topped with two torpedo prawns and served with chips. At under £8.00 this was a phenomenal value dish; the burger was simply delicious.

Though fulfilling, a few more chips would have been nice (and the chips could have been a bit hotter). The prawns did not really add anything to the dish and we both would have preferred hash browns or onion rings.

The pub is clean and staff perfectly efficient. Perhaps best described as a “posh Wetherspoons” this really was rather nice for its category of eatery.

There is also a book exchange area for those who prefer this casual form of library.
