A family festival to celebrate our community and promote mental well-being. This year's theme is 'Yellow'
Elder Stubbs Allotments, Rymers Lane, Oxford OX4 3LB, around third Saturday in August annually
In a green oasis off Rymers Lane, is Elder Stubbs Allotments, which open up once a year for a tantalising glimpse and a jolly festival. It's child-friendly, it's everyone friendly, with an emphasis on calm, activity, good food, nice music, and bright colours. In 2017 the theme was Alice in Wonderland and in 2018 they've gone for Rainforest.
The allotments themselves are enviable, and it's easy to see why they've won a Best Kept Allotment award (particularly impressive as they didn't enter the contest). It turns out to be a lovely natural space, and perfect for exploring while taking in the many local bands, DJs and bustle of a festival.
Last year there were pony rides up and down the grassy paths, swing boats and colouring in the kids' zone, stalls for local organisations such as Oxford Green Party and further education providers, and lots of tasty food stalls, like Taste Tibet. The scent of many different spicy dishes mingled in the air. Plus (new in 2017) deaf choir Handy Voices and a pizza oven too.
The themed Fancy Dress Parade (expect children dressed as toucans or jaguars) starts at the Acoustic Stage at 12.30pm and wend its way around the site before prizes are awarded. Cash only, say the organisers, and please come by public transport if you can!
