Opera Anywhere's Wolfson Weekend

Opera Anywhere take over Wolfson College for a few days, performing everything from Puccini to Pirates of Penzance, in the quad and on punts.
Wolfson College, Fri 24 August - Sun 26 August 2018

Opera Anywhere have come of age - they're 18 this year! They began on a stage in Sunningwell Pond, and water is obviously close to their hearts as well as close to their feet, as these days some of their best loved productions are performed on punts.

They set out to make opera accessible to everyone, shedding its elite reputation, and making it really enjoyable. And they often bring lesser known works to the stage. As part of their Puccini's Heroines show they're staging his one-act opera Sister Angelica, full of the repressed emotions setting alight a nunnery.

Some of their better known repertoire are their productions of Gilbert and Sullivan. Appropriately they've chosen nautical-themed works, to perform on a specially constructed stage and a number of punts. Will the Queen's Navy catch up with the Pirates as they dash around the river in Wolfson's beautiful grounds?

The audience watch from the comfort of the riverbank - you can bring whatever seating and blankets you choose. And if the weather turns inhospitable, everything moves inside to the Leonard Wolfson Auditorium.

What more summery way to catch a bit of culture in the open air? Opera Anywhere tour all over the south of England, so you'll be able to catch them after this, but of course not everywhere has punts, so we recommend you head to Wolfson for the full (and hopefully not immersve) experience!
