The Oxford Brookes Documentary Club screens a free film, open to all, every Thursday, and aim to promote the very best independent, international documentaries at all levels. For LGBT+ History Month, they proudly present Mr Gay Syria, which impressed the organisers at its premiere screening at the SheffieldDoc/Fest in 2017.
The film follows two gay Syrian activists, forced out of their countries, who dream of joining the international beauty contest, Mr. Gay World. Today’s media landscape often highlights disasters occurring in Syria, and this documentary allows audiences to look past the media image and view a beautifully alternative resistance against the oppression felt by minorities in a hostile country.
The screening will be followed by a discussion of the issues raised by the film, chaired by Oxford Brookes' Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Adviser, Jane Butcher.
