Women were first accepted into Oxford in 1879, but even then, their opportunities were very limited - they weren't allowed to receive degrees until 1920, and quotas limiting the number of women students weren't lifted until the Fifties. In this talk, Professor Laurence Brockliss looks at the challenges that the first women students had to face, how they coped with the ongoing prejudice of their male peers, and what careers they went on to pursue.
