I'd never heard of Kate Nash, but having come across Peggy Sue and the Pirates on the dreaded (wonderful!) Myspace, I knew who I wanted to see at this gig. Unfortunately my timing was such that I missed Rebecca, which was a shame in that I think she would have shone in this context, but having seen her before, I knew that her dark, soulfully introspective material is professionally put together and impressive. Nice to have a local representative of sturdy female musicianship in this showcase of talented, and very youthful, ladies.
PS&TP were everything I'd hoped for and more, with incredibly lush close harmonies emanating from two freakishly similar sounding girls in identical big geeky fake glasses. They shared a guitar, squealing, hissing and beatboxing their way through their complex tunes to create a sound bigger and more exciting than many a full band. Think CocoRosie, but from Brighton, and with more punky guts than artschool pretentiousness. Their numbers about the dangers of Television and Tuaca respectively were particularly memorable and can be heard on their Myspace page.
Kate Nash had her own name in lights as well as a glowing pink terrier - making the stage look like a quirky student living room - and her cute, bouncy pop is very charming. Her band seemed a bit of an afterthought, a slightly last-minute addition to the striking figure thumping the piano at the front and talking/singing her way through her pretty, cleverly crafted tales of teenage angst with a cheeky glint in her eye. Tunes such as The Nicest Thing ('All I know is that you're the nicest thing I've ever seen / I wish that we could see if we could be something') had the audience of emo kids with choppy haircuts swooning. The beautiful people were out in force, and they loved it; her record label seems ready to lavish at least some cash on her; and her next single, which we had a preview of, was catchy. She seems to be going somewhere, and her mum (in the audience, along with her aunt) can be very proud.
