Bulletproof Jest by the Dead Secrets is a whirlwind of innovative comic performances. This exciting range of sketches and characters are performed with total commitment by its six-strong cast; from a bundle of exuberant sperm in the first sketch, to a Jets and Sharks-style face-off between traffic light men in the last.
The Dead Secrets creatively use film in-between and within sketches to break up the traditional format. This allowed the sketch ideas to come to life beyond the stage, such as creating a hostage negotiation, the discovery of an ancient cursed toaster, or a promotional video in the fight against…. Space Ducks.
Some sketches did spend a lot of time on exposition and could have been tightened, but were ultimately worth the pay-off, often delivered by film. In a sketch parodying the American film adaptation process, they create an action/thriller of the discovery of the Higgs-Boson particle. The sketch culminated in a brilliantly funny trailer, with several nods to The Da Vinci Code.
A chance encounter between the Pope and a recently-divorced Henry VIII was a ripe opportunity for scripted jokes, but The Dead Secrets kept within the safer territory of physical humour. Tipping the balance the other way, a sketch inviting Charles II to return to the throne, featuring a giant dismembered head puppeted by a singing parliamentarian, was possibly too grotesque for some.
Running at about two hours, Bulletproof Jest is bursting with great moments, inspired ideas and visual gags. This is aided by their admirable range of wigs and costumes – like Melchior's blinged-up gold robe, complete with flashing bejewelled crown. The highlights of the show were an incompetent inventor with a great idea, film shorts of a man being doused in milk, and a disgruntled, alcoholic St Pancras Bear, who gate-crashes the show to reveal ‘the truth' about Paddington.
The Dead Secrets have created a thoroughly enjoyable show – they are definitely a name to watch out for.
