Yard Summer Sessions 2019

Inspired by Claudette Johnson’s love of jazz, DJ Octavia Freud curates free, live jazz sessions.
Tiger Mendoza in session

Tiger Mendoza is a musician, producer and DJ who is known for his remix and electronic production skills, mask-wearing live shows and an open minded approach to collaborating. For his latest album New Ideas, he has taken tracks from his Old Ideas EPs and had them remixed by an assortment of local musicians. All profits from the new album will go to The Oxford Foodbank.

For this Modern Art Oxford Yard session, Tiger Mendoza will be performing as a special guest DJ, mixing up beats, styles and genres to form a soundtrack that compliments the current exhibition Claudette Johnson: I Came to Dance.

Catgod create ‘effortlessly charming, folk-inspired songs’. Their newest effort ‘Heartbeat in my Hand’ was recently premiered by The Line of Best Fit, who described it as ‘a joyously breathtaking listen, pinned down by soft piano melodies and delicate harmonies’.

China Bowls delivers a smooth honey pot of sounds, combining neo soul, jazz and hip hop influences. Bowls’ playful use of acrobatic vocals weave in and out of her percussive guitar tones and combine with honest and insightful lyricism to tackle a range of subjects including grief, belonging and horrible bosses. A true storyteller, she is now armed with a band of some of the best players from Bristol’s thriving jazz scene and her live show soars between solo moments of quiet vulnerability to full blown fire.

Limpet Space Race mishmash pop, jazz, prog and electronics to bring you ‘strange but lovely’ songs. Niko and Jakes experiment with homemade instruments and electronics, jazz approaches and prog influences, and have even built a spinning surround sound system. They like to keep things live, not using loops or drums machines, and just having fun with how much noise two people can make.

Chin ChinChin are a young and exciting group comprising drums, bass, piano, sax and vocals. These new jazz kids on the block have been impressing older jazz heads with their confident relaxed style and have a loyal following with an enthusiastic younger crowd. Having already played their set of cool jazz standards at various jazz venues across town they are definitely ones to watch out for.
