Oxford Windrush Festival Weekend

Windrush Day is a national event to celebrate and commemorate the arrival of the Empire Windrush from the Caribbean in 1948 and the contribution of the Windrush Generation to British economic, social and cultural life. Windrush Day is designed and delivered collaboratively between Oxford's cultural organisations and community partners.

The Oxford Windrush Group are working with leading cultural organisations in the city to provide a unique series of events that highlight the impact African Caribbean communities have had through history to the current day. The events over Oxford’s Windrush Weekend are open to all to discover, learn and enjoy a shared history and culture. All events are free to enter, although some require booking due to limited spaces.

The Saturday of Windrush Weekend will end with the first in a series of annual lectures taking place at the Pitt Rivers Museum. The inaugural Windrush Memorial Lecture, ‘Racism, Repressions and Resistance’ is given by renowned peace and justice scholar Professor Horace G. Campbell of Syracuse University, New York.

Sunday sees a special service of remembrance at the Christian Life Centre in East Oxford. The service will feature the renowned Black Voices and local gospel choirs in the presence of the High Commissioner of Guyana. The service will also recognise achievements of the Black Caribbean community with an awards ceremony.
