After a morning visiting the excellent Titian to Canelletto exhibition today, I went to the busy and very noisy basement café for lunch.

Never have I half eaten such an appalling, poor value meal anywhere, that I can remember. The contents of the tiny fish pie were swimming in a sour-tasting liquid. The roasted root vegetables may have been warm at one point, but on the plate were totally cold. I enjoy an 'al dente' texture to vegetables, but the brassica was uncooked and so cold that it might have been served straight from the fridge! For this and a bottle of water I was charged £12. Needless to say, I only ate a small part of the meal. However, the bottled water was fine.

Due to the noise, the fact that staff seemed rushed off their feet and that I needed to be somewhere else, I chose not to complain at the time.

We visited the café last week after seeing the new Egyptian gallery in order to have a drink and breastfeed our baby. We were surprised at the improvements made to the atmosphere since the museum was revamped - it is now much lighter and with plenty of space between tables for buggies and high-chairs.

Both the tea and coffee were of high quality but quite expensive. We tried a millionaire's shortbread which was also tasty. There were nice discreet alcoves in which to sit and feed a baby.

All in all a positive experience.

The cakes are made on site (i think!) and they are TOO GOOD! I regularly have cake and coffee here and it is better quality and a little cheaper - and certainly a nicer atmosphere than all the other generic cafés. Yummy!
