Don't be fooled by the austere facade: this is one of Oxford's most beautiful and impressive colleges. When it was founded outside the city boundaries in the 18th century it was sometimes referred to as "Botany Bay" due to its remoteness. Nowadays, a walk through the main entrance will take you past a series of beautifully preserved medieval cottages towards the college gardens. At 26 acres, they are among the largest in Oxford and even include their own spectacular lake. The grounds are open 2-5pm daily (except on rare occasions) and entry is free of charge. Just report to the porters and then wander at will. Particularly notable for autumn colours within the city. An urban oasis.
