The College was founded in 1341 by Robert de Eglesfield, a chaplain in the household of Queen Philippa (wife of King Edward III of England), who named it in her honour. It is distinguished by its predominantly neoclassical architecture, which includes buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor./p>

Notable alumni include Henry V, Edmund Halley, Edwin Hubble, Oliver Sacks, Tim Berners-Lee, Rowan Atkinson, Claire Taylor, and Hayaatun Sillem.
