BRINGING SERVICES HOME

 

Oxfordshire County Council is run fairly well. It is not as spectacularly inefficient as the City Council. It just lacks imagination and seems rather remote.

Liberals would:

• Make it more accountable and local.
• Give local social services and libraries the same control over budgets as schools now have. We might then persuade Headington Library to open on Sundays and evenings as libraries do in Warwickshire.
• Get the County and City Councils to run a joint one-stop office. People could then enquire about all council services. Liberals would support, in principle, other community facilities being built on this site.
• Form a Ward Committee with real powers given to them by the County and City Council. This should have its own budget. If one existed now, perhaps it could have stopped the Nuffield Hospital being such a bad neighbour in itts building policy!
• Insist that all public transport subsidised by the County runs efficiently and to time. Otherwise, contracts should be cancelled.
• Ensure that every decision is vetted for its environmental impact. Ensure that sanctions against the Nestlé company are implemented to the letter.
