Apparently 'based on a true story', The Conjuring did not disappoint. The film tells the story of husband and wife ghost busters Ed and Lorraine Warren who are facing their most horrific case yet.
Director James Wan (creator of Saw and many other iconic horrors) is incredibly successful in creating the suspense factor here. I'll happily admit that I did cover my eyes at a particular part where Lorraine and her child are playing a rather terrifying game of 'hide and clap' - *Shudders*.
Even now, a month after seeing the film, I still make sure my legs are securely tucked into my duvet in fear that a demonic spirit will start pulling it during the night. It's definitely safe to say that the scares and jumps from the audience were what carried the film, because the sub-genre of possession horror films has been done so many times now with films like The Awakening and Insidious.
Wan's lack of gore or special effects in this film is a direct contrast to his previous films (Saw, for example) which is refreshing, and proves that horror doesn't have to be all about bones sticking out left, right and centre.
Love love love - that is all I have to say about this film. Some scenes will most likely stick in my memory for a long time (along with Annabelle, the possessed doll's face) and I take that as a sign of a good movie. With that I finish this rather short review and say that I wholly recommend The Conjuring to anybody who is a fan of Wan's previous work or likes the horror genre as a whole.
7/10.
