Saw (18)
Director: James Wan

SAW is a gruesome, gory horror film, obviously inspired by Se7en (why isn’t it pronounced ‘sesevenen’?), but without the wit or the budget to even come close.

It opens promisingly, with two strangers waking up to find themselves locked in a disgusting bathroom, with no idea how they got there. Between them lies a bloody corpse.

The script initially sets up a number of intriguing red herrings, but quickly loses its way with a senseless plot and irrelevant moralising.

With no believable characters to root for, the film simply becomes a test of endurance, with each horrific scene becoming more sickening than the last.
