Soul Beaver
The Point - 4/2/2000

Soul Beaver are one of the few consistently good cover bands in Oxford. The fact that they are possibly the only cover band who get to play the Point (usually an indie or rock hangout) says a lot about the quality of their gigs. I arrived late (as usual) but caught the entire second half of the show. They began with the Otis Redding version of Satisfaction and worked through a wide selection of well known songs. There were a few surprises though; the Doobie Brothers' Long Train Running being one and Lady Marmalade being another. The nine piece band (including a four piece horn section) seemed to be enjoying the reaction from the, quite sizeable, crowd and there was some good natured banter going on before they played their final number (Tears of a Clown). The only down side of the evening was that the sound was mixed too high. Suitable for rock music but not appropriate for the subtleties of soul. In short, Soul Beaver: dodgy name, great band.
