Antony & Cleopatra

Unicorn Theatre, Abingdon
20- 23 July 2005

The Studio Theatre Club takes on the Bard with an exciting production of 'Antony & Cleopatra' this week at the Unicorn Theatre. They've quite rightly chosen to set it in the right period - the play's moral doesn't need underlining by dressing the Romans as Nazis, or the Egyptians as hippies. Philip Shepherd's stark set with its prominent benches serves the action well, using light and sound to ensure the audience is clear when it is in cold, military Rome and when it is in warm, hedonistic Egypt. This entertaining production is blessed with a very strong cast of 23 people, working really well together as a team to produce a fast-moving evening which reminds you why Shakespeare is still being staged, more than 400 years after his death, and that his plays are still relevant and fun.

Catch it if you can.
