Labour's Pledges to Oxford

Welcome to the election manifesto of the Oxford Labour Party. Here are some of the things that Labour has done and will be doing to make your life better.

The other political parties will promise all sorts of things. But promising the earth is easy - delivering it is more difficult. Unlike the other parties, our budget has to add up. Only the Labour Party has the responsibility of running the real Oxford City Council.

There are many things Labour would do if money were more available. But given finite resources, we have identified four priorities - housing, the environment, support for pensioners and the unemployed, a safer city - that we believe are the issues that matter most to the people of Oxford.

We believe that people want a decent home, whether owner-occupied, council owned or privately rented. We believe that people care about their environment and want the council to work with them to improve it.We believe that there is such a thing as society and that we owe a debt to the forgotten and excluded. We belive that people should feel safe in their homes and on the streets of Oxford.

In this manifesto we have set out our policies on these issues. But we believe you deserve more than just another load of policies. So we are making five pledges to the people of Oxford which we will deliver by May 1999.

Each of them will make a real difference to the lives of many Oxford citizens. Having a Labour City Council makes a difference.

During the next year we promise to:

Keep concessionary bus fares at 20p

Install central heating in 1000 council homes

Introduce a register of all private rented housing to enforce good standards of accomodation.

Put £100,000 towards Labour's New Deal to get Oxford's young people into work.

Install 17 closed circuit TV cameras in Oxford City Centre

City Council elections elections are on May 7th. Please contact our Election Organiser, Ben Thomas on 310254 if you would like a proxy or postal vote. These may be with the City Council by 15 April.
