Tarbouch, 29 George Street. Tel. 01865 251911
May 2004
Tarbouch is a new Lebanese restaurant and take-away on George Street. The décor is clean and modern, with a café-style front section and a more secluded area at the back for evening dining. We went on a Thursday evening - and were initially the only customers until another couple ventured in later on.

The menu is not extensive but features mid-priced tried and tested Lebanese favourites. Wanting a straightforward midweek supper, we ordered kibbeh besseneyeh (£8.45) - baked minced meat and crushed wheat stuffed with fried minced meat and pine kernels, and fried spiced chicken liver (£4.20) with fattoush (£3.60) - a mixed salad with toasted Lebanese bread. The food was fresh and tasty, with adequate portions, and arrived in good time. The house wine though was expensive and would still have been unimpressive at half the price.

The service does let Tarbouch down - there seemed to be plenty of staff but they were more interested in chatting to each other than attending to us. No-one came to check if everything was OK, and although we wanted coffee and dessert no-one came to take our order. We even had problems getting the bill!

Tarbouch is open at lunchtimes and its tasty menu and central location make it ideal for a mid-shopping lunch or a snack with friends. However, its lack of atmosphere and inattentive service do not recommend it as an evening dining experience.
