Vocal early music ensemble Stile Antico is world-renowned for highlighting the joys of 16th- and 17th-century compositions, and has received no fewer than 4 Grammy nominations, and this December, they're coming to Oxford! There are still some tickets left for A Renaissance Christmas at the University Church of St Mary the Virgin on 11th December and to give you a flavour of what to expect, the group have kindly shared this heavenly recording of Ave Maria, Virgo Serena with us.
The motet was composed by Josquin des Prez in the 15th Century and follows the announcement by the angel Gabriel to Mary that she is going to have a baby - a fitting piece for this time of year.
The piece will form part of the programme at the concert and will also be featured on Stile Antico's forthcoming album - so if you have enjoyed listening, you may want to sign up to their mailing list (via their homepage) to be the first to hear when it comes out. You could also show your appreciation by making a donation to the Stile Antico Foundation, which is dedicated to the advancement and nurturing of choral music - find out more here.
