Gary Lineker announced as new Principal for Linacre College

Daily Info is excited to share the news that Gary Lineker has been made Principal of Linacre College. The former England striker and current presenter of Match of the Day will take on the role from this September, bringing his trademark charm and wit to it.

Lineker’s career began at Leicester City, before playing for the likes of Everton, Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur. His international career saw him earn 80 caps and 48 goals over an eight-year international career, making him England’s fourth-highest scorer. He is already a Visiting Fellow of Lady Margaret Hall, so has an existing relationship with the University of Oxford.

Dr Nick Leimu-Brown, the current Principal, says “we are ecstatic to have Gary join the college and to bring a greater exposure to the work of Linacre College. He is a natural fit for the college thanks to our strong environmental and egalitarian ethos.”

To reflect the new leadership, Linacre College will bring in the following changes:
- The College will launch a lecture series with former footballers including Michael Owen, David Beckham and Alan Shearer
- Walkers will subsidise 10 scholarships (one for each of their delicious flavours)
- The Match of the Day theme will be played every hour on the hour between the hours of 8am and 8pm on weekdays and 9am to 6pm on weekends
- All sports except football will be banned on site. Anyone who calls football ‘soccer’ will be immediately rusticated
