In 2008 Alan Bennett gave his literary papers to the Bodleian Library describing the gift as 'an obligation repaid [for his free state education]. I see this gift … as some small recompense both to the University and also to the state'. This display of material from Bennett's archive is the Bodleian's own 'small recompense' to the author in the year of his 80th birthday.
